It means nothing to me.

Somebody had to say it!

Shame they couldn't do it without mentioning Adolf. However, it is good to see the BBC making some effort to show something about Europe, rather than that dire recycling of Henry 8th's wives.

I have done research in Vienna in the National Library, which is in the Neue Hofburg. One December, I came out and crossed the area in front of the main Hofburg - it was just like that video and there was absolutely no-one around. I half expected to bump into Metternich or Midge Ure!

An excellent, albeit blood soaked, account of the first few centuries of the Habsburg Dynasty.

I had not heard before of the forgery.

A lot of history covered in that first episode, but it was a good documentary and I'm glad the BBC continues to make programmes about the history of other parts of the world.

Very interesting programme.

How nice to hear the phrase "The defenestration of Prague" - something I haven't thought about for over 50 years and probably will never think of again. It's the only thing I remember about the 30 years war.

Excellent scene-setting for the second "Golden age" prog next week. This is how you should present complex history and it deserves a BBC2 slot.

I seem to remember that Sweden conquered half of Europe which always seemed a hell of a blip in the long swathe of European History !

I haven't watched last night's show yet........but I intend to watch it later today

Which would only hasten the death of BBC4. They need to keep as much original content exclusively on there otherwise they'll follow BBC3....

Keep the good stuff, like this documentary, on BBC 4. I'm half surprised they don't move University Challenge and Mastermind over, as well.

Last night's second episode was excellent.

Louis XIV must have regretted his decisions re Prince Eugene of Savoy.
