Lets face it 95% of adult presents are superfluous and pointless and you diont need or want them. I mean buying a present for say inlaws wtf is that? I think after 16 you dont exchange presents?

Makes much more sense

I agree, but it has to be a wholly personal decision.

I find Birthdays and Christmas, an equally irritating time waste.

I'd say it's time to let grown-ups be grown-ups and make up their own minds rather than dictating what they can and can't do (within reason, which certainly doesn't include telling them when they can and can't give somebody a gift).

I say, let people do what they want with their own money. That's just me though.

yes but sadly all adults follow the norm at the moment and end up wanting millions on crap girfs that they will neither use or want so your theory is a bust

I'm of the 5% who give and receive pretty decent gifts. So no I don't agree!

I think increasingly adults are sick to death of the greed andconsumerism of Christmas.
I know several families who put all family names in a hat and each member pulls out and buys one single gift.

My theory that we are able to make up our own minds and spend our money as we wish in a supposedly free society?

(I know, we aren't really free and don't really have freedom of speech, but we can pretend ).

So what do you want? Legislation that says adults cannot buy presents for each other?

We can't have that now, adults buying each other gifts, tut tut

ETA: That's what we used to do when we were older (before we all went our separate ways and stopped buying gifts for each other anyway).

not when 95% are pointless and unwanted

My partner asked what do you want for christmas and my reply was nothing (in my head I said because I am not a child)

Good for you. And that's as it should be - you making up your own mind like an adult. Much like other adults want the right to.

Agreed. My Dad always insists I give him some ideas (which isn't easy but golf balls or gloves are always welcome). But when I ask him what he wants he says 'Oh, nothing'. I've tried saying the same thing back to him but he insists on getting me something :-/

I'm nearly 50, he's over 80.

So would I..if they were something I needed or wanted. But if I need or want something I visit Amazon and order it. I have no need to stint myself anything as I have an ample income and no-one else to spent it on than myself.

I'm also a sensible bloke who has no use for generic tat. If it ain't functional I don't want it. And if I need something I buy it.

And Christmas cards are for friends that I won't be seeing over Christmas. And by friends I mean friends. Not colleagues. I don't give co-workers Christmas cards.

But what if you had asked for something that wasn't pointless and unwanted?

That has nothing to do with what you said, but I don't have a partner so no problem there

I do give presents to adults - usually edible ones like http://www.hawksheadrelish.com/shop/...jolly-gift-bag

I don't expect to receive presents generally and I'm happy with that - I buy myself something at Christmas. My friends give my daughter something, which is lovely.

I reserve the right given to me as an adult, with my own money, to buy an adult a present if I choose to. You yourself choose not to receive (or ask for) presents, that's your right.

All very grown-up.

I have stopped. Me and OH don't exchange gifts and I don't buy for sister and brother-in-law or nephew and niece any more. I instigated that a few years ago.

This is the year all the family decided to stop. We don't have the money to spend.
There's still young children in the family that will get and that will never change.

I had to edit to add that I have a birthday on the 20th and a wedding anniversary on the 5th January and we never had money to spend on those when the kids were growing up. Now they have, we don't have the money to spend.

If you don't want to buy adults gifts at christmas then don't buy them any. It's up to others to make their own minds up about it though. My in-laws for example are lovely people, who let us stay at theirs evey time we visit the NE and make me feel really welcome. I like getting them something at xmas and birthdays.

This would be a huge problem to us, we do a completely home made Christmas all presents made and crafted during the year, takeaway giving them and we woud have to stop crafting, watch tv all day ! No I prefer what we do now

Me too, and it doesn't have to be something expensive either, it really is the thought that counts for me, and I enjoy putting some thought into what I get people and knowing they've put some thought into gifts for me.

I think that once grandchildren are earning, they should buy the presents for other family members, rather than the parents buying them and putting theirs and the children's names on them
Doesn't have to be anything expensive, but at least it shows they have put thought into it and are prepared to spend their own money
