Just tell 'em it's hard BreXmas - no transference of goods or currency, and no large-scale movement of relatives.

Any chance you two could stick to pm, Skype, WhatsApp or anything else rather than pollute the forum?

Thank you.

Regards presents we only do secret Santa and buy for one person now that all the kids are grown up. It takes off the stress of having to find money you haven't got to buy presents for the sake of it.

I turn 30 in 2 days, I will be getting presents and I will love it

I love buying presents for people, I like to get people something they want rather than something they need (I feel the same about what I ask for, for example a few years ago I needed a new hoover but refused to ask for one for birthday/Christmas, presents should be fun, but that's just my opinion ) but still something they'd get use out of. I was shocked a few years ago when I got a new friend a birthday present and she was very surprised as she didn't really expect or give presents. I didn't expect anything in return come my birthday, but I was really happy with what I'd got her.

I agree, I hate receiving presents and I hate the process of buying presents. If I want something, it's too expensive to be gifted to me, anything else and I probably already have it.

If you want to give me a present, pay off my debts.

I don't know what to buy my parents for Christmas but I always get them something, even if it's just token gifts. My dad loves getting sweets so there's always that option. Never know what to buy my mum though, but I try and get her something as she gets upset if she gets no gifts. I kept getting pestered about what I want for Christmas and there isn't really much. I asked for a Skype headset (need it to keep in contact with my PhD supervisor based in a different university to the one I'm in), iTunes vouchers and some Pokemon cards. Anything else I want or need I can get throughout the year. I need some new trousers and shoes for the summer but I can't get those until nearer the time. I think it's no harm that some families only buy presents for the children. Takes a lot of pressure off I guess.

I'm going to have to bring this up with friends I think. Living on my own now and paying the bills so have very little money to spend.
The best thing mates could give me is taking away the stress of buying stuff for them, wasting money on crap they probably don't need & receiving crap that I don't want/need in return. I'll happily buy something small for their kids buts that's it.

For birthdays, If we all go out I'll buy a round for them or buy some flowers or something as a token but that's it, apart from one mate who I'll buy a nice bottle of Whiskey/Bourbon for & he'll do the same in return! The reason? We only drink them generally with each other when we're having a catch-up, chin-wag, playing Fifa or watching a movie on a blokes night in (at his while his missus goes out and he looks after the kids). Even the stuff he buys me I leave in his cupboard to drink with him (& or some other guys that appear occasionally too!)
The £70-100 that was easily spent on various mates when I was in a couple and bought some nice gifts is just not affordable now & even halving that makes a big difference in my monthly budgeting.

Anybody can stop buying Christmas presents any time they like. There doesn't need to be any kind of rule.

Slightly harsh, I may start a thread on anti-christmas, banning secret Santa and general complaining instead.

Blimey you're a little bundle of fun aren't you?! Any chance you could try not to pollute the forum with grumpiness and Christmas based miserable comments!?!

Merry Christmas one and all!

Oh look....

Tag teaming again.

Seriously, no one wants to read your fawning over each other. Its all very nice you've found each other but reading other peoples small talk bores the shit out of most people.

I can see where the OP is coming from. Christmas is the worst time of year for buying endless tat and crap for other people because it's what is expected.
My family gave up on that a long time ago, so now it's names in a hat, one present per person only, and if you're creative enough to make a pressie yourself rather than buy one - even better.
I would seriously struggle if someone asked me "So what do you want" because I'm not into gadgets or anything. I just don't "need" anything.

(The only thing I would really really want is the flat I live in, but at 400K I think that might stretch anyone's budget just a tad )

And reading some people's snide comments bores the shit out of other people! One man's meat is another man's poison and all that!

As for the topic, why should people stop giving and receiving presents just because they have grown up?

Presents don't have to be expensive to be thoughtful. I think it's a lovely opportunity to show those you love, just how much they mean to you.

I enjoy the process of finding things I know they will appreciate. Presents don't just have to be at significant times either. My best mate and I often see things we think the other will like and get them, just to show we care and are thinking of each other.

Not if you are lucky enough to get the winning lottery ticket bought for you!

I agree with the tat-fest that can happen. I buy throughout the year, when I see things I think are appropriate. Even better if they are in a sale! The Christmas sales are the best times to stock up on wrapping paper, cards, smelly box sets etc.

I really enjoy choosing presents for people who matter to me and who I want to please.
I put a lot of thought, time and effort (and sometimes money too) into picking something special for the individual concerned.

I'm not fussed about receiving gifts myself though, unless a similar amount of thought has gone into it.
