Best/easiest way to measure up suit jacket?
So I'm going to look at getting a suit jacket and waist coat, just wondered what's the easiest way of ensuring a good fit?
Is it just a case of measuring chest and arm length? How do I know how low/High the jacket should sit?, I.e just below your belt? I'm 5'11 and quite slim in the upper body but I've got long arms so I think it's going to be difficult finding a nice fitting one? Don't want to get it tailored as I'm not spending £££'s! Any advice please? |

You probably don't need a tailor, a decent-ish clothes shop should have someone with a tape measure able to give you some advice on what your fit should be.
Outside of that, the only truly reliable way is simply trying them on and having a look at how they fit. And if your getting a jacket and waistcoat only? why not the full 3peice with trouser? Dressing so formally with an unmatched but similar trouser might be noticeable, it is better with a properly matched trouser. If you are going to use trousers you already own, wear them when trying on the jackets. |

Thanks guys for the advice.
Think I'll pop into a store and just try one, see how I get on. |

The best thing to go is go in store and they will take your measurements. However as a general guide your suit jacket will typically be 6 inches bigger than your trouser size. So if you are a 36 inch waist typically the jacket is 42 inch.
Of course that is a rough guide you need to try them on. When judging the lenght of the arms with the jacket on and your arms straight by your side the slevee should end about an inch from the base if your thumb. If wearing a shirt typically the cuff extends about 1-3 cm beyond the jacket slevee. |
