A few years ago I got into reading about and watching all the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Space Programme stuff in a really big way. Amazing.

A pioneer. They'll be printing T-shirts for famous people saying "I survived 2016" after this is over.

I'm unreasonably excited you've read that, i don't know anyone in real life who has!!!
I loved it, as you say it's so exciting and i'm awe of their bravery. Getting snippets of the discussions between astronauts and mission control was fab not only astronauts but men with a very poetic command of language. I find it very emotional.
I loved the book of The RIght Stuff too and thought they did a fab job making the film.

There's a good documentary / mini series based on Moon Shot too. I've just been watching "From the Earth to the Moon" box set I have recently.

RIP

all those pioneers were incredibly brave as indeed were the ones who came later.

my memory as a kid is that until the moon landings the early US astronauts lived in the shadow of Yuri Gagarin who for a time was probably the most famous man in the world

I am trying to work out if John Glenn was first astronaut to be born. I think he is definitely the first American astronaut to be born.

He was the first US citizen to orbit the Earth and will be remembered alongside Gagarin, and lived to be 95 years old. Sounds like he made a fairly swift exit in the end. Pretty wonderful for him, really.

RIP

Glenn was born in 1921, Yuri Gagarin was born 1934. Good age difference there, I'd reckon Glenn was definitely the 1st U.S astronaut

I am talking about any astronaut.

John Glenn was born 18 July 1921

Question is: Did any astronaut/cosmonaut have an earlier date of birth?

Interestingly his wife is older and still alive.

Isn't it amazing how some of these guys are putting the lie to the tinfoil millinery claims that "all" the U.S. astronauts died young of radiation sickness and cancers. Some of them are living way out beyond the U.S. average.

Godpseed John Glenn. I'll not say RIP, 'cos having read a good deal about him over the years he didn't strike me as a man who ever rested a day in his life, and won't be now. Wherever he is now he's still hard charging, you can be sure of that.

Georgy Beregovoy was born 15th April 1921.
Hope that helps Henry
