Have you read Moonshot by Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton?
It's great if you haven't read it yet i recommend it
A Man on the Moon by Andrew Chaikin is another really good read.

in fact, he returned to earth with retro pack still attached, as mission control thought the re entry heat shield might have come loose ...........
