On YF, Sara Cox was astounded that a young person would have a knowledge of the Colonies...what a tool. Because young people just listen to ipods and play candy crush.

I think that says more about Sara than it does about young people in general.

"Colony gin" is such an astonishingly bad name, I'm surprised more wasn't made of it. But no, apparently 'an orange colour' is more offensive

By contrast, I thought Giin was pretty good name, if you drop the slightly twee angle of the two "i"s representing two people. It looked interesting and convincing.

I thought she meant that she didn't think a young person would even consider 'The colonies' to be a good thing, or something that would be used to promote a product.

I think she was more surprised that it's an idea young people would come up with, rather than young people actually having knowledge of the colonies. An appalling name for a product though.

I was amazed that Trishna, as a British Asian, didn't flag up the negative connotations of naming a gin 'Colony' in 2016.

It does seem something of an anachronism, more a view that one might associate with a much older generation. I'm reminded of one of the contestants on C4's Shipwrecked about a decade ago, who held all these weird, and slightly racist colonial-era opinions, because she'd been brought up by her (clearly not very enlightened) grandparents.

I'd add Frances' weird comment about East London earlier in the series- “is this the ghetto?”

What it suggests to me is someone who has been brought up with such privilege, that they have barely encountered the real world.

I must admit, I was surprised that she didn't say something about that too.

To me it felt like Sara was saying an idea based on colony shouldn't come from the mind of a young person, when Frances may indeed have a deep knowledge of that part of history.

One thing I definitely got from the programme, was that Frances didn't have a deep knowledge of that part of history. Or indeed geography.

She seemed to think that Arabia was India. India was way off to the right, off the map lol

A terrible name assuming that their gin was presumably aimed more at young trendy/hipster types rather than elderly ex colonial types!

I did geography to GCSE in school and we did nothing about where countries are in the world. It was rocks, weather and erosion, formation of cities, volcanos and earthquakes, population densities and things like that.

That is true (I did GCSE Geography too) but she was the one that brought it up when congratulating herself on a job well-done, so you can hardly blame others (who may not be as familiar with that qualification) for pointing it out.

My inital comment might've sounded a bit snooty, apologies.

Too busy getting pissed at the distillery to notice and then in a strop when she realised the edit would show her (and Grianne) in an awful light.

It was a truly dreadful name, the story of the adventurer and everything was quite good so if it had been something like Wayfairer, and they had an image of an adventurer picking the spices up on his travels would be good- The orange colour was a disaster as anybody with any sense wouldn't add an artificial colour and it was a particularly murky orange. Alana had the sense to listen to the distiller when they said don't do it

Loved the supermarket reference to Irn bru!

Most spices came from Indonesia (hence its original name of the 'Spice islands') , but she probably didn't have a clue where Indonesia is.

Brilliant accidental scheduling to show this just after Liz Bonnin on WDYTYA.

I was thinking of Tizer, which is also Scottish.

I actually liked the story behind the gin and the branding - with a little bit of work it couldve become a premium brand.

They firstly needed to change the name to Empire Gin or even Gin Empire! The idea of the map amd colours gave it a premium feel and if they put the brand over Africa and focused more on the India part of the map it had potential.

Obviously get rid of the orange colour and I think it wouldve given the other team a run for their money!

I thought it resembled the contents of a colostomy bag and the name was similar to it.

They should have called it Colostomy Gin!

Well there is actually a real brand of Rum called 'Plantation Rum', so if Colony Gin is deemed a branding disaster, what does this say about a successful brand of Rum?

The gin looked like the results of a liposuction procedure.
