So having just clean installed Windows 10 on my HP 250 G4, I've noticed the fan noise more. It appears to always be on. Doesn't sound like a jet engine, but you can hear it over the TV.

It ramps down for maybe a minute, then ramps up again and stays on for a while.

Is this just normal with laptops? All I'm doing is using Chrome.

Thanks

the laptop could be dusty making the fan go much more.
also see it the performance mode should be set to balanced this is in windows 10 settings under power settings I think.
my laptops can be loud if playing HD youtube videos or games.
also use laptop on a hard surface not on a bed and a laptop cooler might help.

My thoughts exactly. I would give it a day or so to settle down before assuming something is wrong.

I checked for updates and it says there was no updates available.

In general though, are you always able to hear the fan clearly?

Have you got the correct graphics drivers etc. or are you just using the generic MS ones?

Have a look in Task manager if you haven't already, see if anything is using a lot of the cpu.

Edit: though the computer says there are no updates there should be a fair bit on a new install.

There will be many updates, I assume they have already downloaded and are being installed.

You could change the settings in power management so that instead of putting the fan when the CPU is getting hot the system reduces the CPU speed. (I don't know how to do this in Win10)

For browsing this should not matter.

I've found HP laptop fans are quite noisy compared to other brands. I have used a few HP Laptops and they all were the same.

Even my own HP Probook's fan is noisy at time even though I regularly clean my fans out.

My old HP laptop's fan ran continuously and noisily, all the time it was in use. It went back to HP three times to sort but they always denied there was a problem. A Google search revealed numerous HP users with the same problem and the same number of possible cures. None of them worked. Eventually after 3 years it self combusted!
The IT chap who managed to retrieve and transfer data onto my new (def NOT HP) laptop said he reckoned they had bought a batch of dodgy components and werent about to admit it because there were thousands out there with the same problem.
Would never, ever buy HP again.

There is something wrong with your laptop fans. It is not normal that you hear the sound over TV. How old is your laptop?

My Macbook's fans can get noisy if I'm doing anything intensive like gaming or watching Youtube videos/DVDs. It also tends to overheat when I'm booted into my Windows partition.

Not sure just how noisy fans are to be heard over a TV but my HP250 G4 fans were also spending a lot of time running at a high speed rather than just idling. One reason for HP laptops doing this can be HP Support Assistant running in the background, and for some reason it sometimes uses a lot of CPU power. To see if this is the reason, next time you are aware of it open your task manager and look for HP Support Solutions Framework and see what percentage of CPU it is using. If it is high, click on it and then click End Process. Do the fans calm down? It's a temporary fix, another option is to restart the laptop. Or you could try uninstalling the programme, you can always reinstall later. I haven't because it's quite useful but I may do so when the warranty expires.

But there do seem to be a lot of people complaining about this on the HP support forums and other places, so there may be more than one reason for it happening. FWIW I'm very happy with my HP apart from this bug.

It's strange, I have an Asus i7 laptop which also has a graphics card, and the only time it's ever come on is when playing a graphically intensive game for a few hours!

^ Same with my laptop when it came to it dealing with anything intensive. The only time I've heard a fan coming on a lot when using a laptop was when using the one that my sister's husband gave me. It had a thick layer of dust between the fan and the CPU. Once I took it apart and removed the dust, it handled things much better.
