Bob Dylan's No Direction Home...
Paul Wilson
09-12-2016
Anyone watching this tonight? If you haven't seen it it's well worth a watch - Dylan fan or not - the best example I've probably seen of how fame curdles very quickly. There's a shot of him in his limo looking positively psychotic. Brilliant music too. Obviously.

3 1/2 hours of Dylan is cruel and unusual punishment. I hear prisoners in Gitmo opt for waterboarding instead!

I recorded the whole bloody thing and found myself fast-forwarding after just a few minutes. I eventually skipped all the way through without finding any part that was watchable. Immediately deleted.

I'm not a Dylan hater, but find that the only stuff of his I really like is on the soundtrack of Don't Look Back. The versions of Love Minus Zero and It's All Over Now Baby Blue are infinitely better than those on the albums. In particular, The Band's horribly old-fashioned, American-rock style of playing ruins nearly everything on studio versions.

I accidentally watched Part 2 before I watched Part 1 which put an interesting slant on things.

Main thing I got out of it was it confirmed my opinion of Pete Seger as a huge musical reactionary snob.

I thought it was brilliant. I'm not an avid collector of Dylan because I find his voice grates after a while, but his genius with words is undeniable. What I loved about the documentary was his insights into what people had expected of him and how he managed to ignore all attempts to put him into some mould, either musically or politically. He's his own man and doesn't care what you, me or anyone else thinks about him.
