You should not be naming it Christmas then.
Thus should be in the smug self-righteous advice forum.

Nope not a single bit, there are plenty of women that have had a child due to not being able to keep their legs shut, the one in the stable is no different and doesn't need a day of celebrations.

For me Christmas will be food, family, exchanging gifts, watching sh!t television, with exception of that battle axe at 3pm, as I never watch her.

Oh, I don't know. I still refer to the last Monday in August as August Bank Holiday, and I've never worked in a bank in my life.

It's sad that some people have to speak this way to get attention.

It's sad that I just gave it to you.

Ah well.

Btw - The one in the stable wasn't conceived the old fashioned way, so I don't fully understand why you felt the need to say this at all.

As this shows, some people hate the fact that what we now call Christmas existed well before Christianity itself, but it doesn't make it any less true. Cultures all over the world marked the Winter solstice in their own way, so if people with non-Christian (or no) beliefs wish to celebrate 'Christmas' without the Christian story that was imposed on it, that's fine by me.
Doesn't bother me at all I have to say. neither adds or deflects anything IMO.

So no celebrating their kids birthdays then

And you've done quite nicely out of it considering you don't want to celebrate it. Unless you'll be working Xmas.

Absolutely not. I also think they should not teach kids the origin of it at schools. Why perpetuate fiction? But then also Santa fiction should not be used as well. I spoke to this guy from Latvia, and he's telling his daughters about Santa, and his daughters are confused that the guy, (their dad) is skint when they make requests like the latest iPhone. 'Santa is paying for it isn't he? They say', and the Dad jokes to me 'I bloody wish!'. Why can we not be honest- have kids have a running start on the reality of life, rather than this pointless fiction.

Santa is nicer fiction though. I'd rather hear "be good for Santa or no presents" over "be good or you'll go to Hell!".

Ok I'm exaggerating slightly, but I have been told I'm going to Hell on several occasions

Why are you referring to a stable? There is no reference to a stable in the New Testament

Christmas is nothing to do with family.

I do find it odd that so many people seem so determined to define "Christmas". Whatever you do or don't do, whatever you do or don't call it, it's a public holiday that anyone can spend as they wish. People can spend it as areligiously (or as religiously) as they wish.

It's the same old bollocks around marriage, this bizarre idea that some belief owns it, and therefore we should all think of it the same way, do it the same way, or be forbid from calling it marriage.

Winterval, Christmas, whatever. Christians don't own the sodding day, neither do pagans, neither do the Cola Cola corporation. It's a mish-mash of different kinds of celebrations, traditions, rituals and customs anyway. Why not pick 'n' mix it?

No, not even the slightest scrap. As I won't be with family this year, I might not even bother with Christmas at all.

Strange post. People all over the world have celebrated the winter solstice since ancient times. Hard to see why that fact is 'pretentious drivel'.
I don't think it is pretentious drivel but I don't think the people who bang on about the pagan origins etc actually care about that. They just point it out as a way of raining on someone else's parade.

They're were quite dark and harsh elements to the Santa myth in the past. Krampus, Black Peter.

Seems to be a big motivating factor, for some.

Santa and Mrs Claus and a load of elves in an isolated, icy community has its own dark undertones, doesn't it? I'm sure of our friends in the Nordic regions have already made their own dark conclusions in regards to it (they're rather marvellous at that)!

I'm glad Christmas Day is on a Sunday this year. I spend Sundays slouched in a chair with beer in hand. So I won't have to make a change to my routine then.

Not to mention there are some freaky assed, creepy looking Santas out there.
