Regretfully, UK Sport has been unable to invest in five sports that were funded in the Rio cycle; Archery, Badminton, Fencing, Weightlifting and Wheelchair Rugby.

Some very odd decisions looking at the details. Badminton (1 bronze) gets cut completely, whereas judo (1 bronze) and modern pentathlon (near misses only) get just about the same. Cycling, which won far more than anyone was predicting, gets cut by £4m.

The anti-gun lobby won't like that!

Bit surprised by badminton as its the sort of sport where you could encourage people to get into compared to other events.

They are keeping back some funding according to SKY News in case they identify medal prospects in the five new sports being added to Tokyo

Yeah, but this is elite Olympic funding, not grass roots funding, which comes from a different kitty.

Badminton decision is very harsh. Must be grounds for an appeal there given they hit their medal target. Fencing a bit harsh too, very close to a Rio medal & they have a couple of very promising guys coming through.

Such a shame for Wheelchair Rugby which is such an exciting sport. But the UK Sport model doesn't really work for Team Sports

I suppose the reasoning is that there are a lot more medals available in shooting than there are in team sports, and we definitely have some good young prospects coming through.

Yeah I suppose. I remember the bloke who won gold in 2012 was considered something of a prodigy but he suddenly up and decided to retire from it.

According to Cycling News, UK Sport say that is down to increased commercial funding for BC and a decrease in cyclists on the World Class Programme.

There is less money for this cycle and more sports wanting it.

Also other priorities as well.

True - and I think the bronze medal we did win was somewhat of a surprise.

Guess they do have to consider how realistic it is to win medals over the next 4 years.

Maybe there is greater expectation/hope in shooting (didn't we win a couple in Rio anyway/)

The badminton one is very harsh, and while it's all very well to say there is a separate pot for the grass-roots sport, it's important to see people do well, and having a proper scheme for our top players means they can afford to help out at the grass-roots.

It's nice winning medals, but I'm not convinced we should be giving support to sports that don't promote fitness at the expense of those that do. It's all a bit of a co-out for the racquet sports. Tennis doesn't get support because it's already got money, badminton's funding is removed because ??? Meanwhile, squash continues to fight to get into the Olympics. These are three of the sports that have excellent all-round health benefits, and badminton especially is ideal for teaching schools.

Weightlifting would probably still be funded if Zoe Smith hadn't been injured and missed Rio.

I've seen other sources say that it's down to reductions in the BMX and Mountain Bike programmes, but the core road and track funding remains intact.
