BIB - so what if they do? This is a dance competition not solely a popularity contest and if the worst dancer goes that's fair enough. If the person at the bottom of the leaderboard has been put there unfairly that's a problem with the judges not the scoring system.

None of it is 'dishonest' - everyone has a chance, however small, to get through. If people want to vote without bothering to read on the website how the scoring works and can't see for themselves that splitting their vote at this point is a bit daft, that's their problem. I don't want to listen to Tess giving a ten minute lecture on voting probabilities at the end of every show.

I agree, most of the problem is with the dance off.

However, imagine a system that guaranteed keeping both judges' favourites and viewer favourites, and only got rid of couples that were indifferent to both.

That system exists with mininal change to the present system, and also keeps the dance off which adds an extra Sunday show for the BBC to claim they are giving the public value for money for the same cost to the License Fee Payer.

I don't mind these discussions (well I am a Maths graduate and probabilities interest me ). I'd rather just see the numbers presented though in a much shorter opening post as I think that would have been clearer.

Do not split your vote this week whatever the presenters or anyone else tells you. Pick 1 favourite you think must be in the final and vote JUST for them.

Be prepared if your favourite is the lowest ranked on the leaderboard, then they will have to be public favourite to have any chance of surviving, they will almost certainly leave if 2nd with the public. They can even be given the boot if public favourite.

I started reading this thread, got a few lines down the original post, and nearly dozed off. FFS, what the hell does all this maths crap matter? It is an ENTERTAINMENT programme, not the end of civilisation as we know it. And I say that as someone who has a degree in maths. There are times and places for these sorts of analyses, and the SCD forum ain't one of them!

I read your earlier post, I just think it sounds like a horrible idea. There is already enough resentment towards contestants that are believed to be 'kept safe' at the top of the board - and that is with the slim hope that they could go each week. If the judges could completely protect a third of them there would be constant complaints and the producers could manipulate things even more than they do now. There is no need to keep the dance off to keep the Sunday show - they still had a Sunday results show in series 8 and 9 when there was no dance off, we just didn't have to see two of the most boring dances again.

Many people (including professional dancers) disagreed with the judges marks for Claudia's Argentinian Tango. She was unfairly rank low that week.

As I have mentioned earlier, the BBC are on public record clearly showing they did not understand the voting system. Also the presenters (or celebs in edits) have said things that are misleading. There is an Ofcom regualtion saying that is not permitted. Not only that the regulation says the BBC must ENSURE the public are not misled. They are not allowed to leave that to chance hoping the confusing maths makes people think things that are not true.

How do you know this is not an infiltration attempt by the North Koreans?

Right now I can imagine the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is sitting in one of his many palaces surrounded by his generals and he is jealous. He is ignoring the sycophants around him who are commenting on how fantastic his hairdo looks today. Instead, he is watching BBC Strictly.

Yes, he is jealous. If he were to run a heavily biased vote like the Strictly vote in North Korea then the BBC would probably be up in arms and pointing the finger of shame at him. But there is not a peep out of the BBC against the Strictly vote. He is probably asking himself how can the BBC get away with this biased vote, but then chastise him and his crackpot dictator buddies when they do something similar? Shrouded in a cloud of gloom he then catches a glimpse of his reflection and his mood brightens. Yes, yes, they are right; his hairdo does look great today.

You want a public vote of thousands that can easily be overturned by just 4 judges.

It is better to have no public vote at all rather than one where it can be ignored.

It's very subjective. I certainly don't consider Ore and Claudia the "two weakest dancers". In terms of technique I think they're all fairly even. It basically boils down to who you prefer stylistically.

I know , it's insane how seriously the show gets taken .
I thought the "GET ED OUT ! HOW DARE HE SULLY THE DANCE FLOOR!" endless threads were tedious enough , but all these mathematical permutations are even more boring .

By the way , "entertainment" left the show weeks ago . Now it's just a couple of ringers and a couple of vastly improved civilians buzzing around perfectly in boring perfection dance after perfect dance . I can't be arsed with all that perfection . I need trips and slips and fun and interesting and imperfect .

I think people just enjoy being able to weigh in. How often have I read "I gave one vote to Thingy because Craig was so mean, one vote to Whatsit because he's trying so hard, and one vote to Thingamajig because she's the best dancer."

Can you imagine what Strictly would be like if it was just left to the public vote ?
No celebrity would take the trouble of learning the actual dances to the level they do currently, it would be full of comedy routines. What percentage of the public actually know what to look for in each particular discipline ? I certainly don't and I've watched the programme every year since it started. We'd get a change to whooping audiences with Davina McCall presenting.

There is little interest in the 4 left...in comparison to Mr Balls, or indeed previous last 4 celebs...you can see that in the papers, but even more in the desperate threads that are cropping up on here!

Hooray! Someone who actually thinks like I do regarding the public vote.

You read so many posts saying the DO should be eliminated, I thought I was the only person that sees it as a necessity.
It's not without disadvantages mind, in the early stages it does have the unfortunate effect that you often get to see the two weakest dances twice. But there does need to be some way to moderate the public vote, otherwise, as Richmond says, you just end with a variant on the other ghastly reality shows.
(It would also be helpful if the judges' voting was more consistent / made more sense!)
