Leaked memo confirms David Davis will go into talks with 'have our cake and eat it'
Brexit: Leaked memo confirms David Davis will go into talks with 'have our cake and eat it' plan If it wasn't so serious it would be funny http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk...-a7465391.html Quote:
A leaked memo has confirmed that Britain will enter the Brexit talks with what has been dubbed the “have our cake and eat it” game plan.
Quote:
And it underlines earlier hints that, if the EU proves “hostile” in the negotiations, Britain will cut taxes and regulations to lure overseas investors. I wonder what "regulations" will be cut?It has previously been suggested that corporation tax will be cut to 10 per cent – despite warnings that the EU will inevitably respond by slapping fresh restrictions on trade Quote:
Crucially, the memo states: “Will trigger Article 50 with an opening approach of open access on all services and goods without tariffs in the UK.”
Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrat leader, said: “David Davis is completely deluded to think you can leave the single market while maintaining full access to it. “He should be listening to the concerns of businesses that trade with Europe every day instead of sticking his head in the sand. “The reality is that a hard Brexit would hit jobs and mean less tax revenue for our schools and NHS.” |

And Number 10 denied those photographed notes were anything to do with government policy....mmmmm.
And that leaked assessment by Deloitte's of the chaos and the government's claim it was conducted with no input from government departments, well....Private Eye reports a Freedom of Information request has revealed Deloitte's had an inside viewof David Davis's department as they had been contracted to provide 'financial planning'. |

Is that not the art of negotiation? Ask for the stars when you want the moon. I can recall Union negotiations and the first call was for lots more money, lots more training, lots more expenses, lots fewer hours when all you really wanted was a bit more money.

Exactly this. UK starts with 'we want everything' and the EU starts with 'you get nothing' and then eventually a compromise is reached. What that compromise will be depends on the bargaining chips each party holds and their willingness to compromise.

Are the public going to be asked to refuse to work for 2-3 days as the negotiations get tougher?

That is called grandstanding and wasting time. EU will just say no. Think again. In fact they have already said it. It's negotiation 'idiot' style. In fact it looks like UK don't want to negotiate and are only going in with with a stance that is totally unachievable. They'll walk away fire up the right wing press in full attack / lying mode claiming that it is EU that don't want a deal.

We never had any chance of striking anyway, the point of course is that each is starting from an extreme position.
We could boycott French Fries at Macdonald's or we could put ourselves in a Truss and boycott French Cheese. |

If we go in with a dumb starting position they are perfectly free to postpone the negotiations for six or more months and meanwhile our negotiating time starts rapidly running down to zero. |

If the EU just say no then that is a problem as it is also incumbent on them to negotiate as article 50 indicates and as the EU's own Constitution grandly states they will respect democratic decisions. If no and intransigence is the order of the day then we are undoubtedly better off out of an institution in which respect for democracy plays no part whatsoever.

The council of Ministers will have a say and as will MEPs....our MP's might be given the opportunity to ratify a done deal. If you believe in democracy then you'll agree our sovereign parliament must decide what is agreed, if not then you are an enemy of democracy. |

If it wasn't so serious it would be funny http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk...-a7465391.html I wonder what "regulations" will be cut? The Tory dream of turning the UK into a cheap labour sweatshop in order to massively increase profit margins for their chums will finally become a reality. |

"................you can leave the single market while maintaining full access to it."
This one is puzzling alright. Davis is talking about the UK quitting the Single Market over the freedom of movement issue but somehow maintaining full access to it Canada style. I bet the EU will have a thing or two to say about that. It's almost as if he's talking about tricking his way into getting Single Market access. |

I bet the EU will have a thing or two to say about that. https://www.ifs.org.uk/uploads/publi...0-%20Final.pdf From the report Quote:
Membership of the Single Market – or near-full membership in the case of membership of the EEA – goes beyond ‘access’ to a market through a trade deal or a customs union by substantially addressing ‘non-tariff barriers’, which are particularly important to trading services. Estimates suggest the costs affecting services trade may be over twice those in goods.
Financial services provide a specific example of what it means to be within the Single Market. No deal short of (near-full) Single Market membership would give similar access to that conferred by ‘passporting rights’. If the deal were membership of the current EEA, the UK would face the significant risk that, despite being a leading international financial centre, its regulation would be largely determined by the EU with relatively limited UK influence. Without membership though, the UK would be likely to lose high-value economic activity and jobs despite its comparative advantage in services. Overall, then, full membership of the Single Market is the deepest form of trade integration and reduces trade costs in a way that an FTA or a customs union is unable to do, especially for services. |

Maybe if less of our supposed great politicians such as Farron talked down our chances we may do better?

Canada have a trade deal that is all. It is a deal that covers trading widgets (goods) and a very very limited services element. So limited it is worthless to UK in terms of the services trading we do with EU.

The intransigence is on the side of UK. It is just bloody stupid to think that UK is going to get the same benefits of being in the EU without abiding by the rules and paying for membership. It's the stuff of silly games that not even Unions in their most strident engage in. Whilst it may play well with rabid right wing press and their readers once again the world will look on in amazement at the incompetence of it all. How low will pound fall and how fast? Those are the only bets worth taking. Then...... after wasting time a proper negotiation will need to begin if any semblance of economic stability and jobs are to maintained.
many 'Brits' now actually believe that we ARE a 'special nation' that the rest of the EU are damned lucky have the special ones as members of their club, So damned RIGHT we should be allowed to keep all of the best parts of being a member while being allowed to ignore all the bad bits, the bits we don't like, I mean that nice Mr Cameron told us we are 'special' just before he bravely ran away, So of course we should have our cake (their cake actually) and eat it, I mean, WE are British doncha know?

I believe that thanks to the overblown nationalistic chest beating superior attitude of some, (mainly right wing) politicians and propaganda peddlers (more commonly known as 'the media')
