He wrote the song as a tribute to his mother. She told him he could make it as a solo artist even though he wasn't confident about his voice.

Obviously he hasn't got the strongest voice but he went ahead and did that performance for his mum. He's worth £33m; he's hardly desperate for money and publicity.

He's gained a lot of respect from me for giving a very professional composed display in those circumstances. Yes the song isnt groundbreaking but that took a lot of guts.

But desperate enough to promote his product on national TV

He is a quite simply dreadful singer

I have a lot of respect for him going on, but let's face it - the guy can't sing and never has been able to sing. The performance was always going to be awful regardless of the circumstances.

He did it because she wanted him to. Harry, Liam and Niall were there last night supporting him.

If I wasn't on mobile right now I would post a bunch of links to videos of the boys singing a capella - with Louis carrying the choruses. He definitely can sing but it's not a strong voice and it's not a solo star's voice. Bear in mind too that he had no solos in the early days and had his mic turned down on TXF - imagine how much that affects someone's confidence?

It's funny how some people resort to personal attacks when they have nothing constructive to add to the discussion.

It's funny how some people have no empathy and try to lampoon someone grieving the recent death of their mother.

You call this constructive? Nah it's just damn right rude and untrue

And I simply ask if he's grieving, why is he trying to sell records on tv and not spending time with his family? It's not even a week since she passed away. I think that's a reasonable question.

People grieve differently who are you to say what he should and should not be doing - his mother would've wanted him to do this it was planned from the starts of XF he would have an exclusive - his family would've all been there

He's a poor singer vocally. Regardless of the fact his mother just died.

But the young girls will lap it up so he'll be successful especially if they mask him behind a studio/video to iron out his limitations.

That's the way singing is these days, all about image and PR. Until we smarten up, this will continue to be the road map for success for poor singers.

Louis should be given a lot of slack. He's just lost his mother. I'm sure he'll have been trying his best to block it out of his mind when singing.

To be fair it looks like all you've done is launch a personal attack on Louis Tomlinson then cried foul when people have called you on it.

I wasn't aware there was an EXACT way everyone has to deal with grief.

I'm no 1D fan by any means but it's simple his mum had a dream for him to become a solo star, she was looking foreword to his performance then tragedy struck. Louis as part of a tribute to his mother did the performance she wanted to see him do.

In these circumstances I will give that guy a standing ovation 100 times out of 100 whether I like the song or not.

Exactly Eva. Everyone grieves in different ways and there is no right or wrong about what to do in this situation.
Louis has known for a while now that his mum might not make it and it could have been something they'd talked about and he made her a promise,

I'm not a fan or 1D or the song last night but I have so much respect for Louis as it was obvious to see (to anyone without a snidey agenda) that the kid was barely holding it together but he put on his brave face and got through the performance.

Remember series 2 of X Factor when Andy Abrahams mum died during the series? He flew back to Jamaica (IIRC) for her funeral ad still performed on Saturday. He was rightly praised for his maturity and strength but, in these more cynical times, he'd probably get slaughtered.
Gary Barlow was also praised when he performed at the Olympics a few days after his baby daughter was stillborn and I remember how poignant the lyrics to Rule The World sounded and how much the other Take That guys rallied round.

Well done to Louis for having the strength of character to fulfill his mums wishes and shame on anyone who thinks its ok to attack a young man in pain

Nobody is 'lampooning' Louis - people are just questioning the wisdom of him performing at the XF final so soon after his mother's death. He chose to go on a TV show, watched by the public and the public have discussed his appearance on the show. Personally, I don't think he should have appeared, even if it was his mother's 'last wish' that he did so. I'm sure she wouldn't have minded if he'd pulled out of the appearance.

You know what? He isnt a good singer but he done so bloody well. His mum died a couple of days ago and what he did takes courage. I feel for the kid.

I really don't understand why people feel the need to make nasty comments all the time. If you didn't think his singing was very good, or you didn't like the song then fair enough.

The nasty digs aimed at him for performing though are unnecessary IMO. His mum probably knew she didn't have long left, for all we know she may have made him promise he would go ahead with his performance whatever happened.

It's just incredibly sad she passed away only a few days before.

I really felt for Louis last night.

Hey - yeah exactly when you're in this industry your life is rather public, sometimes you do have to carry on do and these performances like your examples Gary and Andy - it takes so much strength and courage to do that sort of thing - I couldn't even imagine how I would feel if my mum passed - I wouldn't know how I would cope - but until it happened how can I judge him? for people to say he should and shouldn't be doing this or that obviously only feel there is one way to grieve? But that's not right there are lots of ways to grieve and it's how you feel as an individual - he is quite obviously heartbroken but he held it together and that to me shows more dignity and class than some of the people on this forum!

This exactly. If you're a nasty person, you can be nasty another time or about another thing. Just take a break for now.
