First time to Grand Prix
I'm going to the British Grand Prix next year, my first time to a Grand Prix. Can anyone advise as to whether I should invest in ear defenders or not ( heavy duty?) or just take the squishy ear plugs ? Would the latter be sufficient ?

Personally I've never needed any form of ear defenders at any motorsport event, it's not THAT loud!!
If I had worn them I'd go for the squishy ear plugs. |

You could always take a pair, stick them in your pocket and you've got them if you feel you need them.
I'm insanely jealous that you've got BGP tickets though!! |

I suggest taking a pair of binoculars though as you will be a long way from the track and the "big" screens (imagine watching a video on your phone held at arm's length).

British GP is a nightmare. Too many people and too expensive. Went to watch WEC earlier this year and much better and cheaper.
In terms of noise, I believe there is a decibel limit on the track now so the cars aren't as loud as they used to be. |

If I had worn them I'd go for the squishy ear plugs. As others have said, best to have them on you, because if it IS too loud and you've got nothing, you're going to suffer all afternoon. |

I wouldn't go to the British GP though. Too close to where I live. |

I used to work in an office a few miles from Brands Hatch, and I could hear them on testing days, with the windows shut. I found historic F2, while actually at the circuit, to be unbearably loud.

You definitely need some kind of ear protection. The squishy, in-ear kind should be enough. I went to the French Grand Prix several years ago. Very interesting. It gives you a far better perspective on the car's performance. Their braking is amazing - something that TV never manages to convey.

The noise from the cars has been toned down lately, so it's not as noisy as it used to be,
That said, I think the F1 cars are due another noise upgrade for 2017 ?? I once attended the British Touring Car Championships at Brands Hatch (around 1994 or so i think), and we were stood right next to the starting grid. When the lights started changing for the race to start and they upped the revs to many thousands, the noise, and the shaking ground was unbelievable. I remember my girlfriend looking totally startled, mouthing "OH MY GOD" and trying to hang onto something due to the huge amount of vibration through the ground. It was a lot of fun. |

That sounds tremendous - so the ground literally moved for you then?

Exactly. So Pascal could be in the frame, and much cheaper than signing Vettel.

I've been to loads of BTCC meets now and it's brilliant fun - much better and more exciting than F1! Best experience ever was when we got AAA passes to the final round in Donington in 2004, including lunch in the TOCA tour bus where we met and chatted to Vicki Butler-Henderson, and got access to the WSR garage to see the MG drivers.
Although I'd love to go to an F1 race, I'm more likely to go to the BGP than anywhere else, but I really would love to go to Singapore or Spa. |

To go to any of the meets and places you mention sounds fab, hope you get there. I have heard that its quite easy to get to Spa so perhaps I may try that one at some point.
