The bbc used to show major competitions, primarily the UK Championships from Bournemouth. However, they were so disruptive; they refused to see it as the sport that it is, and were basically a pain in the a**e, that TPTB in the dance world banned them from broadcasting dance events ever again.

They could put an edited highlights programme on BBC4 but I suspect that people who have watched SCD would be disappointed and it would get low viewing figures.

The BBC used to years ago - I wish they'd do it again.

Live streaming of significant competitions held in the UK is normally provided by DSI (the same company who market the Strictly dance dresses)...
http://www.dsi-london.com/

Competitions held on the continent and worldwide, organised by the WDSF, can be seen on YouTube and on their VIMEO channel...

As in they disrupted the running of the events? That's disgraceful!

I have said the same before. They can save money and have similar ratings.

Eurosport used to do excellent coverage of the Kremlin Cup and often the European's from Austria, but it stopped a couple of years ago. At least it stopped for UK, I think it is still shown elsewhere.

Absolutely, and yes, it was disgraceful.

Yes, we used to tune in and watch when it was on Eurosport but now we occasionally catch some dancing when scrolling through German and/or Dutch TV channels. Its a great shame it is not shown on British TV, I wish one TV station would take the chance and show some competitive dancing again, I'm sure there would be more interest knowing how popular Strictly is now.

Are you sure it was the BBC? I can't remember it on any of the BBC channels.

You think it would get similar ratings to Strictly Come Dancing!

Can you explain how they disrupted the events, when it was and what channel because I cannot remember seeing it on BBC.

Was this it on BBC1?

Ballroom baloney: Television
James, Clive
The Observer (1901- 2003);
Jun 4, 1978;
ProQuest Historical Newspapers: The Guardian and The Observer
Certainly not a very good review of the event.

Certainly not a very good review of the event.
I was asking another poster - so I can't help you. I imagine filming getting in the way of competitors and judges and generally not respecting the events but those are just guesses.

I don't think so. Quite a chunk of the audience are primarily looking at SCD as a dance related entertainment show; a straight competition would probably not appeal so much to some (but certainly would to others of course.)

Now if they would just revert to the original SCD of the early series, i.e. no dumb VTs, minimal use of props./themes etc - that would be get my vote!
Oh, and can we have some of our DS experts as the judges please? JenniferF, Kaycee, BendyMixer, Ann_Dancer for example, would all be a huge improvement on a couple of musical theatre hoofers and an ex-ballerina making it up as they go along!

Everything is relative to the expenses. I am sure if they showed the preparation and the competition, I would watch.

They'd never get a big enough audience. The only people interested in seeing those very long competitions would be people who dance ballroom, obviously.

It simply would not work in 2016 and beyond and would make for very dull TV. The whole world is not into ballroom. They want to be entertained.

There are other ways to go and find it for yourself, as explained above, but right now it does not make any commercial sense.

Sofakat, from your post you make it clear that you find ballroom and latin dancing dull. That is your opinion and whilst I cannot agree of course, I respect your views differ from mine. You seem to be under the impression that viewers - and you seem to speak on behalf of everyone - would not be entertained. However, would you or viewers not find good dancing at a top level entertaining ? and to see those competitors pitched against each other?

Sofakat certainly does not speak for all viewers - I would find it highly entertaining!

The fact they can quite easily sell out the Internationals at the Albert Hall each year also rather suggests plenty of people find it entertaining...

That sounds poor organisation, the broadcaster will be told where they can have their cameras beforehand.

The post refers to "the whole world is not into Ballroom" and "They would never have enough viewers"....I just speak for myself.

Yes you are correct that the Internationals sell out each year - I am one of those that buy tickets and watch, when I competed I competed at Brentwood then the RAH too. It is immensely popular and entertaining.

Someone would watch if they put the World Tiddleywink Championships on, I would like to see the World Stone Skimming Championships but neither are also likely to get many viewers either.

I am sure that with the massive success of Strictly Come Dancing that the BBC have other channels have considered other serious dance competitions but have found little interest in them.
