The figures are misleading because I’ve got access to Netflix but I don’t pay for it.

Do you have a link to the report?

25% is a fair number for Netflix, but it could be households rather than people. Households will include flatmates that have access to Netflix without paying for it.

I can't find the OP's recent figures, but Ofcom get them from a reasonably small sample (around 1,500), opinion poll.

The question is something like "have you used ******* in the last year"

Not hard data.

I've tried finding this research on the ofcom site so it would be helpful if the O/P could post a link so that we can evaluate the research before commenting. For example is it households? Adults?

Just wanted to add that I'm not questioning your stats ds_reader, I just find it interesting and would like to see more details about it.

One other point is that Netfix has become a generic term for streaming services like iPhone has for smart phones and iPad for tablets.

And have respondents to the market research answered correctly?

My wife has watched content on Amazon and Netflix but she honestly wouldn't know if it was Sky, Netflix or Amazon.

The data from which reports are written...

Uptake is always in terms of households!!!

Bit more context from Ofcom's Communication Market Report 2016.

This growth in the take-up of paid-for VoD is primarily driven by the take-up of SVoD services: Netflix is the most prominent driving force. Alongside this growth in take-up, there is a correlating increase in the amount of time spent watching these services, as the results from Ofcom’s Digital Day 2016 study show. Since 2014, all adults’ viewing of such services has increased by 8pp to 26% in 2016. All adults under 65 have also increased their viewing of paid-for on-demand content. Watching this content was markedly higher among 16-24s than among any other age group in 2016, at 57% (up by 24pp since 2014). The younger audiences can be seen to have driven the growth in the reach of paid-for on-demand services among all adults.

Among those who watched paid-for on-demand content in 2016, Netflix was by far the most popular service.

The increase in consumption of paid-for VoD was primarily driven by the popularity of subscription on-demand services, most notably Netflix. Twenty three per cent of adults used Netflix in their diary week in 2016 (up 10pp since 2014). The difference between reach of Netflix and the second most popular VoD service, Amazon, is stark: 7% of adults used Amazon’s VoD offering in their diary week in 2016 (up 2pp since 2014). Reach of Now TV has grown by 3pp; up from 1% to 4% in 2016.
