The Irish Ratings Thread
Two significant events in the Irish TV ratings world occurred this month - firstly, the Late Late Toy Show recorded its usual rating of 1.4m, which, being a third of the population, would equate to 21m in the UK. Secondly, the recent purchase of UTV Ireland meant that TV3 regained the rights to Corrie and Emmerdale, assisting the commercial channel's battle with RTE.
That said, the fracturing of TV market shares due to UK competition, makes regular ratings rather more prosaic - RTE One's highest weekly ratings (generally for the Late Late) average 500,000 (so think a 7m UK rating), UTV Ireland had averaged 300,000 for Corrie, with TV3 and RTE Two the laggards, with roughly 200,000 for their number one programmes. |

Market share for Irish and UK stations (November 2016):
RTE One 18% UTV Ireland 8% TV3 6.7% RTE Two 5.7% 3e 2.5% TG4 1.5% Irish market share for all services amounted to 46%, with UK channels accounting for 54% of viewing. |

And the weekly update confirms, as expected, the total collapse of UTV Ireland, with the "highlight" being The Chase with a mere 77,000! TV3 record three 300k figures for Corrie, with the market share seamlessly transferring. RTE One lead, with the Late Late on 450k, and Fair City nearly 380k, but RTE Two continues to struggle, with only the Champions League exceeding 130k.

RTÉ2 is in major trouble - it has lost all focus and seemingly has no direction on where it wants to go. Gradual loss of sports content over the past decade has had a massive negative impact.

And the Six Nations following in the spring - that said, the Championship should return to the channel after the Olympic interlude.

I really don't understand the whole late late toy show thing in Ireland, I guess it's just one of those one of a kind cultural things like the Finns and their saunas

If anything I'm surprised none of the UK channels have tried something similar. |

That's quite a high percentage as well. My understanding is that terrestrial in the UK is still at nearly 50 per cent.

Latest viewing ratings for RTE2 are atrocious (see post 8 above), given that it is HD on Saorview which TV3 is not, yet TV3 are well ahead in ratings. RTE head honchos must be concerned for RTE2 - when it loses 6N rugby in 2018 to TV3 the ratings will be even worse.

It doesn't reflect that well on the output from Irish broadcasters if it can't even attract half the potential audience!
When Sky came along and then DTT with more UK channels available there seemed less need to receive channels south of the border. Demand there for UK channels has always been reasonably high especially since the onset of satellite. From reading on other forums it is clear that the vast majority of homes in ROI have multi-channel television with Saorview and either Sky/Freesat/FTA boxes. Add in the fact that many along the eastern seaboard can receive Freeview from Wales as well as those along the border getting Freeview from N. Ireland and you have a large number of homes with UK channels. Remember also that before the advent of Saorsat (Similar to Saorview minus one or two channels on a tight satellite footprint) the only way to receive RTE1/2 and TG4 apart from terrestrially via an aerial was to subscribe to Sky. |

RTE One 18.08% RTE Two 5.7% TV3 6.76% UTV Ireland 8.09% Depending on the Month TV3, UTV Ireland and RTE2 would share a distant fourth depending on what was on the other side. RTE2 did very well with sports. UTV Ireland was Second almost all the year in Primetime, and they had just overtaken TV3 when December first came around. At that point TV3 took over UTV Ireland and immediately put the soaps back on TV3. Whoever has the soaps has always been a solid second overall in primetime. You're correct to say that RTE2 management should be worried. Next year TV3 will easily be second. I'm not sure what the thinking is in RTE, but as long as RTE1 is miles ahead of everyone else they seem to be happy. Plus the mad scheduling of 3e and Be3 means that RTE2 will come a very healthy third. TV3 will continue to lose viewers overall across it's 3 stations if they don't put HD versions of TV3 and Be3 on Saorview. There are about 20% of homes in Ireland that have a freesat/Saorview setup and they're almost all watching ITV rather than TV3. There's no competition. The SD picture quality on Saorview is very poor. All the Irish stations have to pull their socks up to be honest. 90% of homes can get UK stations now and those that haven't got them are mostly individuals that don't want them. It's not the 1970's any more when about 30/40% of the population could only get RTE1 or RTE2. It's very easy to have a 60% share of the audience every night when a third of the audience have no choice. |

To be honest, of the six terrestrial channels, at least three are filled with sub-standard repeats and filler ( RTE Two, 3e and Be3), with only live sports rights given the second RTE channel any purpose or audience. RTE One is the "serious" channel, concentrating on current affairs and documentaries, and TV3 is raising its quality levels by degrees, but is only slowly building its reputation after concentrating on light entertainment in its early years. TG4 has a critical reputation for its arts, culture and sports schedule, but because it primarily broadcasts in Irish, wavers between 2-3% of market share, so like BBC Four, people "like to know it's there" more than actually watching.

The RTE/BBC co-produced Mrs Brown's Boy won the Christmas ratings battle, with 607,000 viewers. Second place, surprisingly, went to the Stephen's Day Nine O'Clock News!

It's a shame the way RTÉ 2 has gone but inevitable it was going to get squeezed once people could get their generic US comedies an even easier way than 10/15 years ago when many had access to the UK cable channels. Growing up it was probably my channel of choice with Sky One and BBC One just behind. The fact that they got the first runs of the likes of Friends in Europe was fantastic by them. Doesn't seem like there's been any import for them that's caught that buzz for years.

Bizarrely, it's taken 16 years for the Lord of the Rings trilogy to get their Irish television première, with TG4 showing Fellowship of the Ring today!

Ordinarily, a new RTE drama would be guaranteed one of the highest ratings of the year (see Charlie), but not when it clashes directly with Sherlock, one suspects!
