What's with all the £50 notes in circulation?

There's probably already been a thread on this, but the trend seems to be continuing. I've been paid with two more of them recently, bringing the total number of £50 notes I've had in the past couple of months to thirteen (and the total I've had in the past ten years to thirteen).

Why do you suppose this is? Does anybody here understand the logistics of how cash circulates? Like, there used to be a lot more £10 notes in circulation a decade or more ago, in my experience, whereas now there seems to be mostly £20 notes. Am I mistaken?

Hmm, I've not had a £50 for ages.

Haven't noticed, but then I rarely use cash for anything, or get paid in it. I've often got a couple of hundred quid in my wallet but I don't recall having a £50 note in years.

When I do get cash out of the bank I usually go to the machines which allow you to select what you get and I keep to £10 and £5 notes because most of my cash purchases are for things like taxis and such who don't like higher value notes.

What makes you think that?

I've already spent/banked most of them. They are real. And they've come from a variety of sources.

I didn't know you could still get fivers from a cash machine. I was going to suggest cash machines as a possible reason for the apparent shift in balance between tenners and twenties in circulation.

cash machines were giving out masses of £5 notes when the new ones came out, so yes, perhaps they are flooding people with £50s as well ?

Cash rotates generally over the month, people get paid and take out 20's then the next week its tenners and the week after its fivers and just before payday its all the lose change.

50's are of no use as theres so few in circulation and since its rare to see one its hard to know if its a dodgy one (the forgers don't really bother with 50's as whats the point) its a bit like Scottish notes the more you go from the border as you don't know if they're crooked or not.

Personally i'd only take 50's at the bank so they can pay them directly into the account and if they get caught out well its their trouble.

I wouldn't take them to the bank if you think they are questionable and the bank finds they are fake they will impound them and you will lose out, not them.

no, just get rid of them at garages, most of the attendants are so bored out of their mind they never notice

I've only ever had £50 notes on one occasion many years ago when I took a couple of thousand pounds in cash out of the bank to buy a used car. I've never encountered even a single one since that occasion.

I believe a considerable number of retail establishments won't accept £50 notes for fear of taking in forged ones.

I do not think I have ever handled a £50 note, I rarely use cash especially in large amounts, I dislike cash. I paid for my last 3 cars direct from the bank.

Wow I'm surprised £50 notes are so rare in sterling. In euros, €50 notes are very common and accepted pretty much everywhere.

If intending to spend a £50 note in certain stores - especially Sainsbury's then be prepared to cause a hold up whether or not there is a queue as you wait for the check- out assistant to call a supervisor over to examine the note. On another take there are reports that the Govt are considering phasing out fifties because of their popularity in money laundering circles although there's nothing definite as yet.

Most fake notes are dead easy to spot.

Just like hooky DVDs, also easy to spot.

For instance, if you get 'offered a DVD' and it's not white on the reading surface, it's most likely a fake, but other dead giveaways are the bad or lack of labelling, burn marks and absence of holograms, plus most DVDs are not sold in slip pocket format, but a proper snap shut case.

I don't think many people bother making fake dvds these days. They're practically worthless. Not worth the risk. We're in the digital age now.

Maybe more cash in hand work going on? I did a job once for cash, and got all £50s. Makes you feel like a lotto winner handing them over. Tesco had to get a supervisor to check them, the lady in local petrol station gave my a wry smile on about the 4th visit with a £50 I guess they are not that useful for change once in the till.

Not so much these days, you're right, as the police have nicked most of them.

Nowadays, it's mostly what I call 'meat nickers' from places like Iceland or Farm Foods, that come into the pubs trying to sell their dodgy goods, but again the police are catching most of them with the help of CCTV.
