Need to get my taste and smell back, help!

With typical timing I have lost my sense of smell and taste again.

Ive had problems with this for the last year on and off since having bad chest infections last November, still have the cough etc.

However, whether this is a slight cold (feeling v tired with gritty eyes, but not really more snotty than usual) or not I cant tell but my sense of taste and smell has completely gone. Am sitting here eating raw garlic and cannot taste a thing.

We've got a work lunch next week and then a xmas lunch with friends next weekend, is there any magic trick I can try to get the sense back quicky?

Go see a doctor FFS that's not normal.

Yup, see your GP. Even with a bad cold I don't completely lose my sense of taste.

Eat a pickled onion whilst smoking a cigar.

I'm afraid to say, there is no instant cure.

I had a bad virus a few years back and lost my sense of smell and taste and it stayed like that for a few weeks/months. However, very very slowly it came back and I reckon it is possibly at 75% of what it was. This is not a great problem, my taste is fine, but I would say my sense of smell isn't so good. I went to the Dr's a number of times but there is actually not a lot they can do...

I had a terrible migraine last week which lasted 3 days, I noticed that the smell and taste disappeared on the 3rd day, but I put it down to perhaps a cold coming on or this long term issue Ive had. But today, I definitely do not have a cold, I dont have a problem breathing or anything.

I lost mine for a year and a half, eventually it came back by itself but it is not as good as it was. I lost all interest in food as obviously I could not taste it! I found i used to eat by texture, mashed potato and celery was great!

I don't see how taste buds and olfactory receptors are linked ? It's like having a flat battery and a puncture on the same day (for example).

Quote:
“ So, why are taste receptions and smell receptions so closely related? Why is it that, if we are sick, we can hardly taste what we are eating because our nose is blocked? Why would it be detrimental for a chef to not have that good of a sense of smell? Actually, the relationship is like this because “what we often call taste is in fact flavor. Flavor is a combination of taste, smell, texture (touch sensation) and other physical features (e.g. temperature)” (4). When we eat, the reception that our taste buds get also react to the odors released by the food and therefore we are able to identify what it is we are actually eating (5). If we didn’t have a sense of smell, then we could distinguish between something that might be sweet and something that is bitter, but we wouldn’t know which food was which because we identify the food based on smell. This would explain the detriment bestowed upon a chef if he or she were only able to taste, but not smell. They would not be able to understand the full complexities of the ingredients they were working with and, because cooking is such a chemical process, they would never be able to find a “perfect combination” of ingredients for a meal. They wouldn’t be able to understand what factors may turn some people on and off to certain foods. In a way, tasting is only half the package for enjoying food.”
