X-Factor is a Saturday night TV show, for entertainment. They're looking to appeal not just to 'kiddiwinks', but to their older siblings, parents and grandparents. If they aimed the show only at youngsters, they'd find ratings dropping even further, due to many of their target audience being out on Saturday evenings, whilst those outside the target age range would switch off.
The problem with XF's song choices isn't the age of songs (believe it or not, there are many good songs written more than 5 years ago, and there are plenty of poor songs that have bothered the charts recently), it's the recycling of certain songs/artists/genres rather than trying to be a bit more imaginative with the choices. It also doesn't help matters when they slow perfectly good songs down to a funereal pace.
