You can't switch them off permanently but if you go to services/customise there is an 'On-Screen Icon Timeout' option, if you switch that on they disappear after a few seconds.

Yep used to be one of my "bug bears" I had a plasma TV so needed to avoid motionless images on the screen, so what does Sky/BBC do, every couple of minutes a bloody red button appears, or should you dare to change channel, the button appears. Bloody annoying.

Seriously?

Have you never seen the "PRESS RED" prompt in the top corner of the screen, or a "Remind me" and a green button icon to set a programme to record whilst there is an advert on for it?

They are equally annoying when they appear on BBC. You can clear the annoying red button by pressing the green button, but the only way I've found of clearing the annoying green button is to switch the programme guide on and off again ... which sometimes works.

Oh that is what you are talking about. I thought you meant some permanent green or red dot on the screen.

I guess I am lucky because they don't bother me at all.

The remind me thing only appears for the length of the advert so no real problem there.

Has the dreaded red button made an unwelcome come back recently because I’ve only started to notice the dot the past few months though that could be because 90% of my viewing is timed shifted or online.

I seen this thread and thought maybe their pushing it again but could just be me not noticing.

Yes, and permanently. Just stop watching live broadcasts and record everything. You don't get the interactive dots when playing back a recording.

You also have the advantage of being able to watch a 1 hour programme in 40-45 minutes.

Good point, cut out the adverts and in the case of 'documentaries' cut out the 'this is what happened before the break' repeats

And also the pointless first three minutes before the programme actually gets underway (as in anything with Alice Roberts).

I didn't know what the OP meant either. They also don't bother me

What do people mean they are back permanently? I am watching sky now and there are no dots as per almost every other minute when sky is on. They occasionally appear and then go again.
But in answer to your question no I don't think you can turn them off.

No idea. Where did you read that they are back permanently?
