How would it work? Would each UK region get the same number of elected members like the US & Australian Senate or will it be a PR version of the Commons?

Totally agree. I would love to see a fairer, more representative voting system in place. The mess that Labour are in I doubt we will ever see them for one agreeing to it though. That said, I still think UKIP will do well in spite of the system anyway.

It does if the voting system results in a perpetual two party state where neither party wants to change the voting system.

Honestly, whether to become a Republic or keep the monarchy when Queen Elizabeth dies.

Just to put the whole thing to rest for a while.

Other than than. The removal of the house of Lords.

Never, in all my born days, have I read such a laughably clueless summary of PR. You either don't have the slightest idea what you're talking about or you're being disingenuous to the umpteenth degree.

Or it would force parties to reach a compromise...

No biggie and no dispute but would you mind expanding what you think?

AV is arguably an even worse system than first past the post.

PR is essential to make every vote matter. It is no coincidence that turnout was significantly higher in the EU referendum due to every vote carrying equal weight.

As a previous poster stated AV was slated and voted down as unsatisfactory by both sides of the debate. It is the kind of decision that needs a referendum as asking mps to sort it out is expecting thrkeys to vote for Christmas.

Some rather odd ideas there. The country was not "ungovernable" during the 2010 Coalition government, nor are most countries that use PR ungovernable. And of course PR does not "force" MPs on to any seats, it simply gives parties fair representation in a multi-member constituency according to the proportion of votes received.

It's pretty much covered in post #61. My personal preference is for STV.

So many people want a White Christmas that there could be a referendum on whether to vary Christmas. Rather than always decide in advance to hold Christmas Day on December 25th, we could have a referendum on the option of holding it on the first day of winter when snow arrives.

As it is, snow disrupts travel to work, so when better to have a sudden Christmas Day, when we would therefore not have to get to work after all?

After thinking it through i'd say its about time we came up with a consensus on what British values are because when you ask different people you get different opinions and i think we should get our story straight before we continue forcing it on others, so i'd like a referendum where we vote on which values we keep or adopt and which ones we throw out.

Ok then, convicted criminals executed live on air, shown on the bbc (but not before the 9pm ''watershed'', obviously) seems to be what some people want ........

1) Whether to abolish the monarchy
2) Whether to bring back capital punishment
3) Whether to decriminalize drugs

Those are three areas the decision makers shy from but everybody has a strong opinion on.

I don't think just the UK having a referendum on this would be a very good idea.. there's a whole other country that would also need to make a decision, and what if both countries voted for a different outcome?

What about the people of Northern Ireland themselves who are also still very divided on where their loyalties lie?

The reintroduction of national service.

It would teach the young complaining about old people voting for Brexit respect.
It would be a first step on reestablishing the UK as a true world power.

National service would be a good idea.
