£30 too much on gas meter?
Desert_Rain

Hi all,

I just topped up my british gas meter with £8.

I had used 53p of emergency credit, so I expected the balance to read £7.47.........Instead it is showing as £37.47.

I am just wondering if this is a glitch that I need to report, or has anybody else had this happen, perhaps it's some kind of back payment or something?

Best thing to do is call the company, it's the only way to be sure.

ETA: It sounds like the person who topped up your key topped it up with £38, rather than £8 - if that's the case, look on it as a gift I've had an erroneous top-up before, the meter takes whatever is on the key, the error will just show as a mistake at the till for the employee, as - according to Paypoint - the £30 was put on and paid for, same for the Gas company.

It's not that, that's actually the first thing I checked but the receipt shows £8 top up.

It's either a glitch, or a bonus I'll ring them tomorrow to find out.

Hi,

Is it possible you got a small rebate or some type of winter payment?

It would come in a letter (we get £140 in a letter, and you have to apply).

Then it would have a barcode which they would scan and put on to the key.

Amounts on the key come from money - the person who puts the money on the key says how much is going on on the machine in the shop, or the barcode from a letter in the case of the Warm Home Discount.

ETA: I believe the company can put money onto the meter, so - as I said - give them a call. EDIT: some companies that is, Scottish Power never used to. If something went wrong with payments - amounts, or money not gone onto key, that was between you and the shop. All they could do was re-set the key if there was a key error.

Also many companies don't hand out the winter payment till the end of Winter (February/March) to just scrape into the government deadline. I've always suspected they hope a few pensioners will die off first to save them £140.

True - they send it late so that you've already paid a fortune on winter fuel!

can you access your account online and see the full details ? Perhaps the shop topped up with wrong amount, receipt would still show what you paid though.Perhaps not call, they might find a mistake and remove the £30 credit ?

Mystery resolved.

I got a letter this morning, the £30 is an apology.

2 weeks ago my meter broke and they had to come out, they were an hour late and the £30 is to apologise for "missing the appointment" even though they were only late and didn't miss it at all
