The BBC says it has been informed by his daughter that the former weather forecaster Ian McCaskill has died aged 78.

Very sad.
I remember this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOZAXi1Lmmw
at the time of the first tiny rover on Mars.

According to his tribute on R5 last night Peter Gibbs has retired from the weather service. I wonder if this is anything to do with the switchover ?

Just an observation, but surely "quoting" a previous idiotic and offensive post in later posts merely give the original poster more oxygen?

Anyway, back to Ian McCaskill I remember him saying one autumn broadcast words to the effect that "we're going to ave a old-wives summer in the next few days - which is perhaps as well as my old wife hasn't finished doing the garden!"

Priceless!

He managed to inform in a humourous way, without every being patronising, nor dumbing forecasts down in the way that so many do today. Only the likes of Tomasz Schaffenaker manage that today.

I would have thought that Schaffenaker is one of the worst offenders for "dumbing down".

There was a rather touching Weather Forecast just before Midnight last night, by Philip Avery,

It came on just after the repeated Newsnight which finished off with a Tribute for Ian McCaskill.

Philip started it with saying I bet you wish you could here Ian's voice for the next 2 and a half minutes rather than mine. Then he mentioned how he spent his first couple of years, with Ian being at his side.

As the guilty party in quoting the slur on Ian McCaskill, I only did so to highlight the comment that I found offensive. I did not know any other way on this forum to show which comment I meant although I now realise that I could have just used the username and time to identify it.

I do not believe that is gave any oxygen to the original post, rather it highlighted his foul mind.

I was glad to see that the original post and my response were removed fairly quickly afterwards. I would like to think that it was because of my comment rather than in spite of it.

Ian McCaskill was a fine broadcaster and it was always a pleasure to view one of his forecasts. Even a forecast of bad weather left you smiling because of the way he presented it.

It was sad when he stopped appearing regularly on our screens and it is deeply sad that he is no longer with us.

My favourite Ian McCaskill moment was when he apologised for not being able to show us a satellite picture at 6 pm, and opened up his jacket to reveal a satellite picture cellotaped inside his jacket.

RIP Ian.

One more time. Let's sit back, close our eyes and imagine him saying this to us.
