Can I suggest an Appreciation section, which can include the horrendous boobs on TV thread, and the regular Rachel Riley pervathons? I'd imagine that many would support the idea of having a special corner for the binocular collectors. It seems preferable to them getting in the way of the telly forum. We get told to ignore them, but it's a bit difficult when they're almost ever-present. Again, just a thought... and this seems to be the right time for thoughting.
Good thoughting, I agree.

I really don't like the idea of posts increasing in size if they're voted for more, it devalues less popular posters who may be making a good point but don't get upvoted, and it turns the forum into a popularity contest instead of a place for reasoned debate. Plus it could get trolled very easily.

Probably because we're on opposite sides of the debate. We notice the opposite side because it winds us up more
That may very well be true.

Notifications - any time someone replies to your thread or mentions you, a notification will pop up on your screen.
Does this mean the forum will be accessible through Tapatalk? I like that software more than using the mobile version from my phone, that's for sure.

I doubt it as that prevents advertising revenue AFAIK.

If they use something like Invision the mobile version is very good.

Hmm... I use Opera Classic and it can be a bit slow (more so now I'm logged in & trying to post!). Tapatalk works but if they won't use that I'm sure there's a similarly good software. Tapatalk was the first one that came to mind when they mentioned that you'd get a notification whenever someone mentions you.

(we bet you thought this was a different type of announcement, no?)

Hi all,

We will be initiating work to upgrade the forums to a new platform soon. This will be the first time since the Digital Spy community began 16 years ago that we are moving to a completely new platform - no small task as we prepare to move over 600,000 users and over 84 million posts - and we wanted to let you know ahead of time.

The reason for this move is, as dedicated members of our boards are aware, the system we are currently using has not scaled as well as we hoped. The age of the software and our size has throttled functionality that you would expect a forum to have (a working search being one of them).

The forums will being going in read-only mode for up to 72 hours when we commence migration of all your threads, posts, messages and accounts. Once we have a definite date scheduled, we will let you know - though don't hold it against us if that turns out to not be enough notice!

Some of the things that will be changing:

Search - we will be gaining an advanced search. You will once again be able to search through users, posts, threads and forums.

Notifications - any time someone replies to your thread or mentions you, a notification will pop up on your screen.

Reactions - you will be able to react to any post.

Ban Amnesty - In 16 years, we have amassed over 16,000 banned accounts. Starting now, we are going to be reviewing anyone who chooses to appeal their ban again. Those wishing to appeal should email forum@digitalspy.co.uk with the title 'Ban Amnesty'. Be sure to include your forum username when messaging!

Jail - Our new forum software brings with it a points based warning system. This means that rather than issuing bans for smaller offences, we can place users in jail - this allows you to stay on the forum but certain privileges will be lost (the ability to make threads being one of them).

Forum Updates - with this change, we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to review the many different forums we have on offer and whether they are still necessary. As such, the following are our current proposed changes:

- Fashion & Beauty will be merged into General Discussion.
- Comics will be merged into its parent forum, Print Media.
- Gaming Forums will receive a restructuring; PC and Mac Gaming & Mobile Gaming will be merged into the main Gaming forum, with more focus being placed on the major consoles
- Need Help? Ask the Digital Spy team: This forum will be archived. We will be making ways to contact the forum team more visible, so the need for this forum will be replaced.
- Netflix and BT Vision will be merged into Online Entertainment Services
- Doctor Who will be promoted to the main board.
- Football will be promoted to the main board.
- Dancing with the Stars will be merged into the Reality TV forum.

No threads should be lost in this process, however if you want to save anything we would recommend looking at it now.

New Forum Design, Emojis and auto-save - The forums will be getting a new lick of paint and our current emojis, including fan-favourite cat-dog will be retired. All posts created will now periodically save as a draft.

Embedded Media - With this new forum software, we will be lifting the restriction on embedded media. As an example, if you link to a YouTube video it will automatically embed into your post for users to play without the need to leave the site.

There are several new functions and ideas that we have and when we flesh them out a little more, we will of course announce them in a similar way.

We know this is a lot of change and that we haven't always got it right. We ask that you will be patient with us, both before and after the migration, while we try and iron things out. We expect that some things will not be correct immediately but hope this will go as smoothly as possible.

Thanks
DS

I think this is brilliant, sad about Dancing With The Stars, overall, I think it's great, I can't wait to see the new emoji's.

Hopefully this happens soon.

They won't announce what software they're planning to use. I'm secretly hoping Invision 4 as it's excellent, but I'll settle for Xenforo I suppose (Even though IMO the interface is a bit dated, even on the latest version).

phpBB is another but it's shocking (not future-proof) and the latest vBulletin is poor too (clunky, badly designed). Invision is fast, bleeding edge modern and very intuitive. That'd be my pick. If they're seriously daring they'd choose something like Discourse but I fear the average user would find it too different, even though it's actually incredibly good.

This is how I've modified the current forums to suit me using a browser User CSS plugin:

I hope it's something fairly similar for the new design.

A Like button is fine for the reason you give, but I think if you disagree with a post, you should say why rather than just having the option to "red-arrow" it, which is certainly not making a positive contribution.
Absolutely yes. I agree with the above post

Still don't think the like/dislike is a very good idea.

Just watch all the children with a grudge (real or imagined) come out to play.

Can to mods confirm that everyone will start with a clean slate please?

The bury posts idea sounds truly horrible. Who on earth thought that is going to be a good idea? For example when posting in popular sections such as XF or BB if someone doesn't like the "forum favourite", they could see their posts being buried every single time when their post could be constructive.

This is a forum, we should be allowed to read differing views and opinions to a certain topic/thread.

If you still insist on implementing this extremely negative idea than you should at least give us an option to turn it on/off.

I didn't really do anything, unlike James who created his own Style

I'm using the Stylish add-on for Firefox and Chrome browsers and a Style, "Retro" by Emjay:

https://userstyles.org/styles/browse...ms=digital+spy

There are a few others to choose from, I think this is James' style:

https://userstyles.org/styles/120677...rums-blue-flat

There's also an add-on for Chrome by Stormwave that lets you add things like avatars, inline pictures and videos:

I turned to Stylish after the last site make-over a few years ago. Got rid of all that glaring white with Grand Dizzy Classic.

No need for stylish now when you have a updated forums with themes that DS could add.

That sounds brilliant.

Do all our points/warnings start from zero then or are they carried over (I am on my last atm)?
Glad to see a proper response to the Announcemnt as I made a Thread for the Apprentice Forum in case they forgot what was about to happen. However, wouldn't be so cheery about it, seeing the trouble it caused last time we had a change.

We are also keen on the burying of poor-quality posts that are voted by the community. We can then see if there are particular trends ("does a user have many buried posts? Maybe they are doing it deliberately to disrupt the forums?...")

So basically if someone has unpopular or 'eccentric' viewpoints they will be penalised and voted down? Sounds very 'Daily Mail arrows'.

Love the idea of reactions, pics/vid and emojis, it's just bringing the forum inline with everything else. Also love the idea of jail, especially if theres a pinned JAIL thread and you put who is in jail and why and how long for !
The only problem with Jail, is if fms start being negative about a prisoner, which isn't what DS wants. Therefore using a Jail isn't a good idea.
