"Hi all,
Welcome back! We have successfully completed the migration of all the user data from 2000 through the Wednesday we placed the forums as read-only.

This preliminary process was necessary as we needed to check that all user associated data - private messages, posts, threads, polls, emails etc - can come across seamlessly. We identified a few issues that we can now iron out when we do a final migration of all user data from this point on.

We appreciate your patience and we apologise for the interruption to your forum enjoyment. We are hopeful that when we begin the next migration, we can take our learnings and speed up the process."

Are we due another lengthy period of downtime at some point then?

Can DS mods clarify this?

Yes please. You'll have plenty of time to buy more when we disappear into that cold land again.

Oh well at least I can post on my 70th Birthday after all; even if we do not have the present of a shiny new forum. I have my avatar all ready and waiting.

My guess is that they'll need another, much briefer interruption to migrate the data that has accumulated since the forums went back online today.

Didn't they say it was going to take 72 hours? I guess we will go offline again soon.

A dummy run just to do some in-house testing and see what still needs ironing out before it goes live then? Fair enough.

For purely selfish reasons I'd like to beg the staff not to do anything before Sunday. There's a rather important final on BBC 1 tomorrow night

I think you might be right, on the avatar thing mentioned higher up the page I don't think they're having them are they on the new setup. [which is a shame]

True, but on my clunky old tablet it does seem to be running slightly faster than before. Probably just a coincidence though.

Out of interest does anybody know roughly how much data 16 years worth of the forums would take up?

I know text is quite small but I imagine there's a lot in the case of DS.

It sounds like the main site's dumbification is being extended to the forum.

Still, I'm grateful the forum isn't being retired.

Thanks DS.
