Well yes, my personal troll with MPD will surely dislike everything I say but might. Just make the MPD profiles even easier to spot

It could help people realise what others think, if a post gets 50 dislikes it is hardly somebody going around getting all their friends to dislike it, probably that actually that's the way people reacted to it.

It also means people can give thumbs up to helpful posts e.g. in the Computers forum a helpful and technically correct answer would have good thumbs up, but a bad idea could be seen as generally agreed upon as a bad post.

Don't think so. They wouldn't be doing such a major upgrade if the whole shooting match was about to disappear.

Oh I have no doubt there will be stalkers coming on the board for various individual members.

The trouble is they can do f*** all on here.

I still don't agree with the like/dislike idea though.

There are far worse out there - Horribly cliquey places that've been going 15 years or more and still have memberships numbering in the hundreds because they're so oversensitive and over-keen with the ban-stick. Judgements here might sometimes be hard to fathom but by comparison it's not bad.

Not a fan of those either. Just encourages petty grievances and stalker negging.

You do realise he was never banned, don't you?

He left the board of his own accord.

Yeah.

When people fall out the results can be truly spectacular and sometimes very nasty indeed.

It's a shame so many people are like that online.

But they are.

The like feature is a good idea i'll be "liking" all the posts from the old birds all day!!

Pitman will "like" any post about beer!!

Just two examples of what will happen

As a percentage of population, North Korea have fewer people in jail. There were some moderators on a serious power trip.

I can live with it, but there should be a "meh" button too.

I use this app, it doesn't slow down the forum and brightens it up a bit.

Try the app. ^^^^^

I don't like the idea of like/dislike palaver unless they can be identified.

I'm just looking forward to DS implementing these changes and the inevitable melt down on here. The fury and outrage is going to be hilarious.

It would be fine if that were always the case, but we've lost a fair number of good posters over the years. Perhaps we should now be able to petition DS to invite them back - if they'll have us!

Wow I didn't think so many people were permanently banned.

Just because bans are being reviewed doesn't mean they will be lifted. In some cases, people may have been banned because they went too far in their opposition to something that was being discussed at the time. They may have moved on from that issue and be willing to conduct themselves within the rules in future if they are allowed to return.

I am not opposed to embedded content being added to posts if it doesn't make the site less user-friendly.

^ This. Also that figure includes every single spammer. We would say at least half of that figure is from accounts that registered just to flood the forums. To cross post:

To clarify some of the questions that have come up:

- Ban amnesty: this is not a straight 'you appeal, you can come back' - we will be reviewing every account and deciding on an individual basis. If someone was incredibly disruptive, chances are we will not be allowing them back. What this does allow us to do, however, is if some time has passed and someone accumulated too many small bans, ending with a permanent ban, maybe we can allow them back. People that have re-registered again and again are unlikely to be allowed back.

- Reactions: we will be introducing more positive than negative reactions. All actions are logged so we can review them all. Similarly, they are for the lurkers more-so than the regulars, though they are of course welcome to use them as well. Many members sign in and just read rather than taking part. We are also keen on the burying of poor-quality posts that are voted by the community. We can then see if there are particular trends ("does a user have many buried posts? Maybe they are doing it deliberately to disrupt the forums?...")

- Embedded media: how often do you see YouTube links posted? It's a lot less often than you'd think. That is the only time a video will be in a post and they will absolutely be user-initiated (click to play).

We will be paying close attention to feedback and seeing how images work out. We will have some new guidelines in place that will prevent people from responding in just memes or just posting a picture and moving on. We anticipate they will get used in the first few days after relaunch, then it will calm down.”

I'm overjoyed that search will once again be working! At long last! I doubt I'll use the like/dislike thing unless it's anonymous - I can imagine some people getting the wrong idea if a poster likes or dislikes their posts a few times so I'll probably give that a miss, unless there are no names attached to the likes/dislikes.

It's a shame this little chap > will be going though. I like him/her.

The forum concept is still a good one, the decline in this forum has come about because of it's dated software.

"Social media" that isn't very social is not going to thrive. Maybe DS can recover itself by getting with the times.

It does seem that the powers that be have enough of a future in a world of Facebook, Twitter and those annoying list websites aimed at 13 year olds.

I do hope the upgrades help bring more life back to the forums as they used to be.

I don't think facebook or Twitter are really discussion places, whereas here is and I just much prefer the community here to Facebook.
