My view on Reddit is it's the bad part of Manchester circa 1973. And it's that which is the attraction not it's awful commenting structure.

Reddit has something about it, a "vibe" if you will, that DS forums used to have. Youtube is losing it's mojo as well.

Regardless of that, in the field of social networks the thing that is guaranteed to fail is copying something else.

I suspect that those in charge at DS Towers will copy and not create.

I love the up/down vote idea, works so well on many forums and places like Reddit and encourages positive contributions.

Love we're getting new emojis (please allow rolleyes to return)! Love also we're getting notifications upgrades and working search.

Embedded media will be good sparingly as well. People will be able to post graphs and such to posts.

When will the upgrade happen I wonder? I am hoping it's InvisionPower the forums will be run on as that's very good, fast software.

Are we just letting the ''quite'' pass then?

Then just say nothing. Nobody has to say 'this'. I read a lot of threads where I don't offer an opinion or a 'this', I just read the thread out of interest. I don't need a button to click to indicate my presence was there, not that anybody would know who the likes were from anyway.

Another thing that causes a lack of cohesion is when I have certain posters on ignore and I find I have to un-ignore them or click on [view post] in order to follow a thread.

So if this sort of "auto minimised" thing is going to happen on the basis of down-voting I don't think it's actually a good idea.”

Don't put people on ignore then, simple I've never understood why people do that, as you say it can ruin the flow of a thread. If you want to ignore somebody who is a pain in the arse, ignore them. I do it every day

I don't need it but adding a like type thing would be an indicator of forum opinion on a matter. Some will like it some won't.

Oh I know, and I'm just giving my tuppence worth - for all it's worth - as we all are, in a conversational, linear, non-voting fashion . We all have different ideas of what we do and don't like, there are many things I like about DS and it's simplicity is one of them.

I look forward to a successful rollout presenting us with a fresh, easy to use and fault-free forum in the same way these have always been handled.

However, I shall hedge my bets and lay in popcorn...

I don't ignore anybody. Ignoring should be limited to private messages.

Nor can I. It gets complicated and I'm not sure what somebody is responding to.

Yes some people are that childish - I have seen it before.”

So have I, on this dreadful website called Topix - http://www.topix.com/forum/news/topix/TEP7VBEV512LIFP89

It just creates idiots who will place a monkey nut next to your post regardless if they dislike you. It's a rather infantile concept to mark posts out like that anonymously for good or bad. You can see it in operation in the above link to a subject, and that subject is nothing like as bad as some I've seen.

Well of course they do. There's no need to keep executed people behind bars after all is there.

I find some of the worst posters include those who remain unbanned, so perhaps allowing some people back will improve the place

I recall when Hearst took over there was a definite shift in moderation such that the more anti-establishment viewpoints were not welcome.

Also just simple whimsy was frowned upon.

Moderation defines a forum.

I wonder if the like/dislike system will be anonymous? That could lead to problems.
Also I've seen the community able to issue infractions/bans through a points system. I hope that isn't implemented here either. It would be like a Nuclear apocalypse.

I never quite understand how people manage to get banned, I've been here a long time, disagreed with many people agreed with others but never a sniff of being banned. Just try and remain polite, wouldn't shout at people in the street so don't shout at people on forums. Ds seems fair to me they usually have a good reason to ban someone.

Forums generally are becoming quieter and disappearing, other forms of discussion are taking over, less moderated forms from what I hear, long live ds with its moderate discussion I say.
