Have you all seen what's on? It's just like a normal Friday or Saturday night.

It's never, that different it's an easy day to plan for years
I don't need to look but I bet it goes something like this
2pm Christmas TOTP ( why only at Christmas?)
3pm HRH
3.15 Family Film
5 News and weather
5.30 Strickly Come Dancing
6.30 Dr Who
7.20 comedy ( open all hours/soft family funny)
8.00 Call The Midwife
9.15 Film ( something with Eddie,Benedict or Tom)
11.00 Mrs Browns boys Xmas Special

The only major difference is The Queen and she only occupies 15 mins.
The best stuff is post Boxing Day anyway.

If I was in control, I would schedule the highest rated shows but for BBC not start these earlier than 6pm - plus limit shows to no more than an hour. The Great British Bake off moved from 4:45 on Xmas Day to 7:25 on Xmas Eve (Michael McIntyres slot after it was moved to Xmas Day).

e.g.
6pm EastEnders
6:30 Call the Midwife
7:30 Doctor Who
8:30 Strictly Come Dancing
9:30 EastEnders
10:00 Mrs Brown's Boys
10:30 Michael McIntyres' Big Christmas show

I think it's a bit odd putting Bake Off on Christmas Day. Yes it's very popular but to me would have suited Xmas Eve and the second one where it is on Boxing Day.

The days of over 20 million watching on Christmas Day are gone, viewing figures are not that much different from a normal Friday or Saturday night.

Isn't it usually thought that many people are still working on Christmas Eve and many of them late home. They tend to have other things to do in the evening so suspect the viewing figures are not that high.

Cos we're all bored of the same thing every year. That's why no one tunes in.

Yes we can see how the viewing figures of Eastenders, Coronation Street etc have plummeted with people not tuning into the same thing every night.

Christmas is a time when people like familiarity - there is the famous comedy sketch that German TV have played every Christmas for many years.

Christmas day TV for a good few years has been dire and lacking in imagination.

I remember when you had the big shows like the Morcambe & Wise specials all the way through to the times you'd have the big movie premiere of the year, like Tim Burton's Batman, when a big deal would be made of it.

Nowadays they just seem to phone it in. Like the OP said, its just reminiscent of a normal Friday or Saturday night TV.

6.45 Paul O'Grady Love of Dogs at Christmas.

9.00 Maigret's Dead Men

Is their night time viewing - apart from an hour long each of Emmerdale and Corrie.

Early film at 3.10 is The Lion King, late film at 11pm is Love, Actually.

The only thing on ITV I'll definitely watch on Christmas Day is Love of Dogs.

And I won't be watching anything on BBC1. I don't watch soaps and I don't watch reality shows, which limits my telly viewing these days!

I know some will sneer, but when the likes of Bill Cotton or Michael Grade were planning the schedules, they'd rub their hands together at the prospect of making Christmas Eve, Day and Boxing Day genuine events. There'd be a structure and a pace and a wow factor that drew people in. Now there's just no imagination, no care, no effort evident at all.

I think you've hit the nail on the head.

BBC One is sticking too closely to the same old formula year-after-year, to the point that there is no longer any excitement around the schedule reveal because you know it'll essentially be very similar to last year, and the year before, and the year before that, etc. Even the ever diminishing number of viewers who stick BBC One on all evening on the 25th, must be getting at least slightly bored by the predictability of it by now, surely?

Apart from The Queen, a family movie and EastEnders, I don't think the rest should be guaranteed a slot on an annual basis as seems to be the case at the moment, which leaves plenty of potential slots to try some new things on the big day.

Also, nobody's saying don't do a Christmas special of Strictly, Call the Midwife or Mrs. Brown's Boys - as someone pointed out these are amongst the nation's most popular shows - but they don't have to all air on Christmas Day itself, and by spreading them out you also create more interest on other days.

Just a bit of variety is needed, we're not asking for much. Sadly I can't see it changing any time soon. This year was the perfect year to shake things up after last year's appalling ratings by Xmas Day standards, and look what we've got. Same old stuff once again in pretty much the same order.
