Even the ever diminishing number of viewers who stick BBC One on all evening on the 25th, must be getting at least slightly bored by the predictability of it by now, surely?
Why? What's wrong with predictability? Everything about Christmas is predictable, isn't it? The kids wake up absurdly early. You have the same meals every under the same decorations with the same people and watch the same favourites on the telly. And that's the way it's always been.

Out of all this complaining the only thing to emerge is that some people don't like the current crop of regulars as much as they liked (or at least think they liked, nostalgia being the liar that she is) the old regulars. Well, I'm sorry but Eric Morecambe died. I'm sure if he'd known that you'd all be left so bereft without your Christmas special he'd have tried to hang on a bit longer but I somehow doubt that even then he'd be doing shows in the second decade of the 21st Century. One day Call The Midwife will no longer be with us, Strictly will be but a memory and Doctor Who will have made his last trip to Trenzalore and you'll have new people's favourites to moan about but until then can you not just quietly do a jigsaw puzzle in the other room and let us get on with our Christmas viewing in peace? Santa will look very favourably on it.

I would put something live on. When I was a lad Noel was always live on Christmas Day, it was quite exciting.

I think you might want to revise that opinion in view of the facts being unfortunately to the contrary.

Just look at how Radio 2 brought Junior Choice because people liked to hear it on Christmas Day morning.

How many houses have the same Christmas decorations that have been used for many years, brought out of the attic every year.

Live TV was a bit more of a novelty then and it required some careful planning to find somewhere that they could do an OB from without costing too much. Now they can do one from anywhere relatively easily but means more people have to work on Christmas Day. It's not just broadcasters, buy a newspaper around Christmas and most of it will be written in advance and very little "live".

BBC have a live service Christmas Day morning, ITV don't seem to have anything live apart from the news.

Have you all seen what's on? It's just like a normal Friday or Saturday night.
Well not really.

Of course it depends what floats your boat but Doctor Who is quite a big deal for many, especially as there wasn't a season in 2016 so first episode for a year and then no more until Easter.

EE always builds to a big episode at Xmas.

So it's not so much what is on but the content of them. EE might well beon every Friday but it won't be a standard Friday night episode.

Indeed. Here's Christmas 1976. Hardly any different really.

Its a myth Christmas tv was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better in the old days as there was more than a bit of dross in the schedules. The ONE thing that saddens me these days though is the sheer number of soaps in the schedules. We have soaps morning noon and night is it TOO much to ask to have a rest from them for a week at Christmas

No because all the addicts will be going Cold Turkey, then probably eating it after Boxing Day! Ha!

If anything, BBC One was at least a lot better than ITV even back then. The commercial channel was boring in 1976, imo, and it still is!
