radio garden - internet radio streams from around the world

Obviously internet radio is not a new thing but this site has a fun method of navigating the myriad of radio streams out there by placing them onto a bing maps globe that you can rotate/zoom etc and select via geographical location. Worth a look while you're idly browsing Digital Spy

There's a good thread on Reddit about this - lots of discussion and suggestions:

Spent a few minutes finding stations, including a few that seem to be in the wrong place - but aren't. The very first station the web site found for me was PRL in Polish, but located near me (does it use your computer's location?) so that was interesting. Then I clicked on Nice and it found a Russian language station (probably because of the proximity to Monaco), moved across to LA and found an Iranian station and then up into the Simi Valley to find an Armenian one.
On the downside, it says Solar radio is unavailable but Xfm is still available. Great fun though and a clever use of technology. |

Been checking the history section, European stations featured include Poste Parisienne, Radio Luxembourg, Radio Nederland, Radio Northsea International, Radio Arthur (on during the miners strike), Sheffield Peace Radio and Radio Alice, Italian free radio station, being raided.
Jonathan Marks has posted on Facebook "Just come back from Hilversum's Sound and Vision Archive and a conference on radio. Included the launch of a European project called Radio Garden, organised by Bas Agterberg, Specialist in Media History and Jonathan Puckey of Studio Puckey in Amsterdam." |
