Leave campaigner wants EU nationals given assurance they can stay...

Prominent Vote Leave campaigner Labour MP Gisela Stuart has called on the government to guarantee EU Nationals can stay after Brexit.

Quote:
“Labour MP Gisela Stuart, who was chairwoman of Vote Leave during the referendum campaign told the Today programme: "Britain should make clear at the start of the Brexit negotiations that EU citizens already here before that date can stay".”

The ticking time bomb....

Quote:
“Brexit is causing a staff shortage in the NHS with nurses from EU countries returning home and others facing racist abuse from patients.

The impact of June's European Union vote was revealed by Dame Julie Moore, chief executive of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

She said: "We have traditionally also looked to the international market to come [to the UK] but I have to say Brexit has sent a bit of a shockwave through some of the staff we would have traditionally recruited.

"And, in fact, I have had some staff from the EU, from southern Ireland, looking to go back.

"Of great concern to me is some of the incidents of abuse that some of my staff have suffered from patients following Brexit, racist abuse.

"We have benefited as a country greatly from international collaborations and I would hate to see that lost in all of this.”

Does that include convicted criminals?

Nothing like a vague and inaccurate thread title Op, par for you of course!
Gisela Stuart actually said all those already entitled to stay by law, presumably the same applies to UK nationals in the EU , she said new arrivals would not be covered!

Credit to her. VoteLeave's official line in the campaign was that all EU citizens already in the UK would be allowed to stay. Her and Boris stated this repeatedly.

Of course she might also be cr@pping herself as at least 3 of their claims are already being investigated by the Crown Prosecution Service with a crowdfunded court case for deception of the public whilst in office being prepared.

Yeah, they do the crimes that British criminals refuse to do.

Any news on these? All I can find is a remark from someone at the CPS saying “We can confirm that this letter has been received and we are currently considering its content.” unless it is this 'consideration' which is the 'investigation', or it has moved on from there?

This presumably being the one where they are looking at making cases against both sides?
"If Brexit Justice is really about truth in politics then we need to investigate dishonesty on both sides of the political divide. If we can build strong cases against political leaders from both leave and remain camps then we will prosecute both leave and remain camps,"

These links surely elsewhere but just in case people haven't seen them
There's http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/brexitjustice/updates including remarks about the complaint to the CPS
And http://www.brexitjustice.com/ of course.

Considering she's a German living here, I don't find her views exactly surprising.

Mrs Stuart was a prominent and very articulate promoter of leaving the EU so must bear a heavy responsibility for what has happened since the referendum. Het crocodile tears and hand-wringing will not excuse the damage she and her Brexit cronies have done.

In order to consider it they have to conduct an investigation which will take a few months. They won't give updates until the investigation has concluded. At that point they will say there is merit to the allegations or there isn't. If there is merit then they will commence criminal proceedings against the individuals.

That's the one that's out there and quite ambitious. There is another one being prepared which takes a different approach.

I think you find that you're wrong. She moved to the UK in 1974, got married and naturalised. At that time it was impossible to have dual nationality and she gave up her Germany citizenship. She is as British as you and I; she has lived the majority of her life in this country and has been British for the majority of her life. It matters not one bit where she was born.

I wonder if they can time it to coincide with parliamentary debates on A50,, that would be fun to watch!

Right, so the public crowdfunded one is about both sides but the secret yet-to-be-announced crowdfunded one is only about action against the Leave campaign (or is it)? Presumably at some point they will also be 'out there' or they might have trouble with the 'funded by the public' thing!
Though really I'm not sure what is to be achieved by having multiple separate legal actions where one is just a subset or variant of the other, especially as the 'brexitjustice' one does at least on the surface attempt to retain some semblance of balance.

we should wait and see what the eu do about british people living abroad and if they want us out then we should do the same to them, also we should charge them for our services when we leave

You are aware that anyone who has been living here for more than 5 years in accordance with exercising treaty rights is a permanent resident. This is because of DOMESTIC legislation and will be honoured regardless of any "deal" - this applies to the majority of all EU citizens in the UK.

WE are the ones initiating change that will mean our citizens living in other EU countries will automatically lose their EU Treaty rights to live, work, study & retire in those countries. If that is what we initiate then we have no grounds for complaint when our citizens in other EU countries face the consequences of our decision.

Any attempt by us to force other member states to treat our citizens as EU citizens when they no longer will be so, will be seen by the other member states as a form of crude blackmail where we attempt to dictate terms to them. Doing so will backfire massively and will seriously damage our prospects of getting a good deal from the other member states post-exit.

May has already proposed this and a reciprocal arrangement to the EU which refused to discuss it as there will be no negotiations before A50 is triggered. Meanwhile ahead of that it instead came up with the idea of UK citizens being able to apply to become EU citizens. At this stage it would be best to wait until A50 is invoked and take it from there and I very much doubt if EU citizens living here and UK citizens living in the EU will end up being told they have no right to stay.

If they want to live in another country, then they should take citezenship of those countries.

Nobody has any "Right" to anything.
