It seems like they start later each year, just a few days before Christmas. Whereas, before they'd start a whole week or so before. Or am I just remembering wrong?

Are you talking about school holidays or what?
At my workplace we work up to and including the 23rd.

School holidays are about the same. It all depends what day Christmas falls on. I only have my normal days off plus bank holidays from work.

You might want to change the thread title seeing as what you've asked is directly opposite to your title.

Only get bank holidays off, so it depends when Christmas Day falls as to how long I get off, school holidays are a different thing I'm not sure how long they get these days.

Yeah, I have to work up to and including the 23rd this month so used to having a week or even half a week off before the Christmas weekend. Just have longer off in the new year..

I work with schools across the country, so have a fairly good picture of term times (as opposed to just local knowledge).

Almost all schools are having two weeks, as they have done for the past several years (including back when I was in school), almost all breaking up this Friday, back just after NY.

It depends when Christmas falls. They've broken up as late as the 22nd in my experience.

I remember a time when the Christmas period didn't seem to start until around 12th December.

This year, I remember seeing Christmas adverts in late August.

I think it depends when Christmas falls, if it's midweek then some finish the Friday before but with it being a Sunday this year many are working up till the 23rd.

I have a friend who's a teacher in a London school and they don't break up until next Tuesday, back home in Cornwall the schools finish this Friday.

We get 5 days off at Christmas, just happens that means we are finishing on the 21st this year which does seem a bit early.

I don't like the timing of school holidays this year

I much prefer it when we finish about two days before Christmas, then it's all over, allowing you nearly a fortnight of holiday.
This year there's over a week off before Christmas, which you just waste by preparing / shopping etc, then there's just a week before going back.

Well even thought I work in a school AND the site shuts, I still have to use 7 days holiday over the Christmas period. Ridiculous if you ask me, just get the bank holiday off over 2 weeks.
