A thread to post updates for this year's winners single.

It is currently #1 on iTunes. In the overall charts, today's midweeks have it at #5. The YouTube clip of the performance is #3 on trending.

Not really. It's still doing better than last year's winners single, and considering how much streaming is now dominating the charts, I think it's unreasonable to expect the winners single to dominate as much as it once did. Not to mention the obvious decline in interest in the show itself.

Yes a flop then.

What constitutes a flop, in your opinion?

I was only joking mate. I'm not sure how you really quantify music sales these days. I'm from a generation where you used to listen to the top 40 on a sunday night and buy your music from Woolworths.

Does the winners single still get a physical release?

I wasn't particularly keen on Matt but his single is doing fine so far. For many of the reasons you've pointed out, I think it's unlikely that we're going to get a winners single that tops the chart again. The shift to the global Friday release date means they'll automatically be playing catch up. It's never going to sell on Hallelujah or Impossible levels as it's a Christmas single, but it should manage add modest amounts to its sales each Christmas period.

Choosing a Christmas song was an interesting choice.

The song has a very short shelf life. It will chart this week and next week. But once Christmas is over, will there be any interest in it as a winner's single?

No. It's digital only for the first time ever

Not this year. Strange decision I think as although sales for physical singles have obviously dived, it could still have helped towards the final total.

Probably not, not only because it's a Christmas single. I'm sure it'll probably trickle sell a bit throughout the year. James Arthur's single had sold 1.25m after about a month, and by October this year it was around 1.34m. Matt Cardle was on 800k after a few weeks, but passed a million in June 2012.

Agree, It is doing better than expected. This year there will be no physical single either.

Sorry, I realised just now you were a different poster to the one who originally called it a flop.

Well, it's hard to see what's most popular. Yes, there are songs which are streamed millions of times per week but I don't think that measures a songs popularity as those stream figures aren't unique, so it's not the same as downloads where more often than not, people would only download a song once (within a single week anyway). That's just my opinion. I know some people agree with streaming included in the charts - I've got no issue with that.

I'm shocked it's even top 10, so I'd say it's definitely doing better than expected. It's his next single that will be the decider.

Yep I'm pretty sure the XF winners singles have traditionally sold a lot better on physical format than normal singles released at the same time. I've always thought that there's a significant number of people who buy them as 'souvenirs' - a digital file doesn't fulfil that role in quite the same way. I guess also the likely consumers may skew older as well which adds to a higher proportion of physical sales.

Anyway, I have yet to hear this single, possibly thankfully. Despite not being keen on Matt at all I find it difficult to imagine it being any worse than last year's musical embalming.

Yes. I'm having a look at the previous charts. Every single year, bar the first winners single in 2004, the winners single has topped the physical singles chart in the opening week. When it comes to downloads, all winners singles topped the downloads chart apart from Steve Brookstein (it looks like it wasn't released as a download), Joe McElderry (who was #2) and Louisa (who was #4).

In my opinion, it's a far better winners single than last year but I'm not sure that'll be enough.

From Buzzjack, this is where the sales figures stand:

(Missing data: Spotify streaming, Apple streaming)

#1 - 33.8k - Clean Bandit feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie
#2 - 26.4k - Louis Tomlinson & Steve Aoki
#3 - 23.1k - Rag'n'Bone Man
#4 - 22.2k - The Weeknd feat. Daft Punk [Starboy]
#5 - 21.8k - Matt Terry

At the same stage last year (on Wednesday, 15th December as there was no Tuesday update),

#1 - Justin Bieber - Love Yourself (67,857)
#2 - Justin Bieber - Sorry (48,873)
#3 - Adele - Hello
#4 - Grace feat. G-Eazy - You Don't Own Me
#5 - Justin Bieber - What Do You Mean?
----
#8 - Louisa Johnson - Forever Young (24,752) *

It went in the charts at #3. Not too bad, it has to be said.

It sold 45,827 copies, which consists of 35,145 downloads and 10,682 from streams. It was the number one for the week on sales. Louisa last year sold 39,196 in her first week.

Louis Tomlinson debuted at #2, with 47,626 sales.

Not very nice. Why wouldn't you just be happy for him doing relatively well?

I think he's done really well tbf. No 1 in sales terms and over 1m streams if I'm not mistaken? The fact that Louis couldn't even get number one shows how strange the charts are these days.
