He did say he was from Screwfix however I could tell he was a call centre droid, i.e. not a store manager from local store. I figured what the hell.

Recruitment companies - I usually press the ignore button (but not unemployed).

63 LinkedIn requests (most will be recruiters) - it looks stupid when so many are your contacts (if you accept them).

Look at it this way, it is to an applicant's advantage to have an initial telephone discussion to ask questions about the detail of the role and whether it is of interest and/or if they hold the skills, knowledge and experience to carry it out. It saves the applicant and time, money and effort preparing for an attending for an interview for a job they find they do not want. It also breaks the ice for your face to face interview.

All depends if the applicant wants the job or any job .......”

If you really want the job then answer the easy telephone questions.

Once you put them off they don't call again often (I put them off - and never hear again - until the next job comes up).

That's quite judgemental. The IP may already have a job and was sleeping on a day off.it's very easy to blame when there are no facts and you are always right.

Is it acceptable for them to call to set up an interview later - or is that taking too much of a liberty as well?

It seems to me that if it's OK to say you are unable to spare the time right at that moment but happy to take a call at a mutually convenient later time, there's not much to complain about. And if you're not doing anything else and are happy to have a chat there and then, you might be quite pleased to go along with them and do it, as you've saved yourself the worry you might quite naturally experience when waiting for a call like this.
