Money or no money there HAS to be a tree on that square! It's part of the tradition! Legend has it that if no tree is present on Christmas Day then it will be a happy Christmas with love and warmth (which of course we don't want)

If I recall correctly, Ian told Kathy he couldn't afford it to put up the big tree?

Theres ALWAYS been a tree there has to be one. Why didn't Ian buy a big tree instead of buying thousands of extra regular sized trees in tonights Episode.

Yes - that's it; Ian has provided the tree in the Square in the past (and I believe but maybe wrong, that the Mitchells did at least once when they were in the Vic) as Walford Council either haven't put one up or one year put a tiny one up.

Whoever provides the tree also has to provide the lights and pay for the power etc and get it all done to HSE standards - there was once a brief plot about this (a couple of scenes in one episode) - so it is a significant outlay.

It's silly when they do all this messing about saying who is gonna pay for the tree, they done the same last year. Just get on with it and get it up!

Meanwhile Ian has bought a big batch of small ones that aren't selling.
