When will the ability to like/dislike posts start and are you looking forward to it?

I can see this totally being misused in the reality TV and similar forums. You don't like my favourite act/person so I'm disliking your post.

I think certain cliques will like each other's comments, and make a point of disliking any opposing views. I've had differing views to some folk on here, and the next minute... a posse of their mates take it upon themselves to launch unwarranted vitriol at me. It's going to be absolutely rabid on the Big Brother threads.
Why on earth bring the option onto a forum that should be there to encourage a healthy debate, not become a popularity contest.
At least bring back the eyeroll....

A dislike button.... Hmmm.... I can see the bullies, trolls and other dysfunctional human beings rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of all the trouble and disruption they'd be able to start with one of those at their disposal.

It'll be the death of many threads when a poster gets several "dislikes" (often from one user with multiple accounts) and starts asking why people don't like their message or thread and the whole thing gets sidetracked into a petty squabble about "freedom of speech".... the topic is discarded.... the point is lost... the thread disintegrates.

Oh well..... if the moderators, or anybody who has anything to do with the upgrade ever reads this......

Don't say you weren't warned.

I won't be using the dislike button even if I dislike what someone is saying.

I'm going to ignore it like I do everywhere else that has it

As posted on the other thread:

We are also keen on the burying of poor-quality posts that are voted by the community. We can then see if there are particular trends ("does a user have many buried posts? Maybe they are doing it deliberately to disrupt the forums?...")

So basically if someone has unpopular or 'eccentric' viewpoints they will be penalised and voted down into silence? Sounds very 'Daily Mail arrows' but worse in a way becausing of the burying aspect.

Will we actually see who is doing the liking and disliking?

We will have to be careful what we read into someones post as the written word can look very different when spoken.
IE we can all say things with a smile that look entirely different with a frown or in anger .
There are also a lot of anomalies like words that sound the same that mean something entirely different. depending on their efficacy.
If the word dyslexia was around when I was a boy that would of been me instead I was just stupid.

The chronology of posts is something we are very keen to preserve. "

So it's a way to give the moderators an easier time!

Indeed.

The competition among a few to rack up the greatest number fo dislikes will see some outrageous trolling attempts to.

Indeed again (same as with ignore now).

I hate the idea.

The children will come out to play.

Cliques will like each other's posts even if they are utterly shit and good posts will get disliked by those who hold grudges, dislike the FM or just want to stick the boot into someone.

It will be a troll, WUM and bully paradise.

Just wait and see.

I like the idea in theory. But I do realise anyone who holds a grudge will downvote you. So I think it should be allowed, but not interfere with the running of the thread and therefore allow it to flow as it usually does, and not turn the thread into "popular" opinions at the top. That for me, would be the ideal.

I'd have thought the ban amnesty would have the biggest worry for people concerned about it turning into a WUM paradise?

There are some people (with multiple accounts) who shouldn't be allowed back. If you have been banned 4 times, surely you cannot learn your lesson. There are others, who in my (almost) 2 years, I have felt shouldn't have been so harshly treated. They have debated well, but because of others harbouring resentment and reporting them every time they post, have been banned unfairly.

I might use likes - I've seen them elsewhere, and they are a quick, easy and unobtrusive way of saying "I read this and enjoyed it", without having to have extra posts breaking up the thread.

I won't be using dislikes - if a post annoys me that much, I'll either ignore it, or actually debate the point

I must be too old, it's funny how the like/dislike rating really seems to mean something central to today's internet people and gets them complaining.
If anybody thinks that a dislike rating is going to do anything about my inane puns and repartee, they're about to find out they have another thing coming.
If I see 50 likes and 100 dislikes next to a post of mine, I'm going to think I'm doing much better than somebody with a handful of likes. Ta very much.

That's a fair point, but I've seen voting systems on other forums.
Posters who bitch about downvotes either modify their behavior or are rapidly eliminated from the ecosystem.

Same here. I think it's an awful idea, for all the reasons above .
A dislike button will stop a lot of debate too.

Saying that, I'm all for a positive like button. I've only been back on for a few hours and already there's a few posts I wish I could like.

Neither will I (or the like one, for that matter). I'm quite capable (as I do now with the ignore situation - which I never use either) of ignoring a post or telling somebody I agree or disagree with them.

I've never quite understood how you like an opinion anyway Agree with it, yes, but liking always sounds odd.
