So far it's still anyone's guess as the Friends Of Jo Cox and Hospices Choir are hardly setting I-Tunes and Spotify alight. Maybe Clean Bandit will hold on after all. I'll keep you posted throughout the week if anyone's interested.

The Jo Cox version of The Stones You Can't Always Get What You want is favourite with Ladbrokes at 6/5 but will need to pick up steam to have a chance.

The album No.1 is virtually certain now to be Ball/Boe.

It's wide open this year.

Clean Bandit have got off to a good start with Rockabye #1 on Spotify baring in mind that Spotify data is always a day behind.

On iTunes, Clean Bandit are gaining on Rag'n'Bone Man who is ultimately gaining on Matt Terry.

Matt Terry has been added to the New Hits playlist on Spotify, as has the Steve Aoki & Louis Tomlinson track AND Zayn & Taylor Swift are now on there too. However, the latter two are dropping off on iTunes.

Then there's Mariah currently up to #3 on Spotify and most likely to be the next Spotify #1 in the next day or two.

As for the charity songs, there are so many of them this year I think this could ultimately be a hindrance rather than an advantage as I suspect overall sales will be split between the different songs. I doubt many people will buy all of them on iTunes.

It's left to be seen if Jo Cox's charity single is given the media push next Monday in the news. It might do a "NHS Choir" and shoot to #1 on iTunes next Monday/Tuesday and sell enough to be the Christmas #1.

I would like to see some huge sales this year. Historically the Christmas No. 1 has sold a pretty large amount (within that week). Last year it was only 124k - this week looks very stacked in terms of contenders so maybe we'll get some good figures.

If anyone's interested, as far back as available - the weekly sale for each Christmas No. 1:

Code:
1980 - 252,000 - St Winifred's Choir: There's No-One Quite Like Grandma
1981 - 207,000 - Human League: Don't You Want Me

I don't think this year's Xmas No.1 will have big sales at all. 100k + will be good.

Wow at the Shayne Ward sales. Doubt we'll see figures like that ever again unless it's some huge charity record like Band Aid that all the country gets behind.

That might've been my post you read.

I made that prediction based on last year when Good Morning Britain championed NHS Choir for #1 although that charity single had two versions iirc, and both went top 5 on iTunes thus maximising its sales.

I still have a gut feeling GMB will try the same trick on Monday and champion the Jo Cox tribute charity single. Although when you've also got Liv 'N' G and The London Hospices Choir also in the mix, it could have a backlash against them. As in, why support Jo Cox's charity single, but not the Liv 'N' G single in aid of Bradley Lowery's Fight against neuroblastoma which is just as heartbreaking.

Granted it wasn't Christmas week, but when Will Young won Pop Idol his debut single Evergreen sold 1,108,659 in its first week.

As for Shayne Ward, Christmas day 2005 fell on a Sunday so had the luxury of having a full 7 days of sales leading up to Christmas day. Many of those CD single purchases would've been a nice little stocking filler for all those young fans Shayne gained on The X Factor. Plus CD singles were still selling in high numbers that year. Just ask Peter Kay and Crazy Frog!!!

It's a shame that isn't it? When you could spend £1.99 on a CD single and get 3 or 4 songs and you actually owned something.

Lol @ Matt Terry not getting number one. Glad Cowell's constant reign on christmas number ones is taking a knock.

Looks like it's clean bandit all the way. Which is good, as it is a great song.

Why is it a LOL-worthy moment? The X Factor obviously doesn't have the interest in it it once had, but a #3 debut isn't that bad. Yes, a few years ago it would have easily made #1 but that's simply not the case any more. And it was a charity single - why is it such a good thing that it doesn't make #1?

I think one of the one-off releases will make Christmas No. 1. I can't see Rockabye (much as I like the song) managing it again. It's a similar situation as last year.

I saw that for the first time last night on The Last Leg. It would be nice for a novelty record to do it but I can't see it, realistically.

Actually, if you look at the sales chart - Matt is at number one, but now the overall chart includes streaming, Matt comes out at number 3.

From Official Charts Company.

Official Charts Company sales reports based on preorders and early sales data up to midnight last night (but with the vast majority of streams yet to be tallied), indicate that the London Hospices Choir are currently leading the way today (December 17), ahead of BRITs Critics' Choice winner Rag'n'Bone Man (2), and a fan-led campaign to get Manchester band Inspiral Carpets’ Saturn 5 (3) to Christmas Number 1 following the untimely death of drummer Craig Gill last month.

But there is a long long way to go yet. A full 7 days streams still have to be counted, along with 6 days of sales, indicating that the race is still wide open at this stage.

The choir of staff, patients and volunteers from 18 hospices across London have released a cover of Mike & Mechanics’ The Living Years, and are heading a closely fought race at the end of day 1 by just over 600 copies. With the entire Top 20 at this stage separated by less than 3,000 copies, there is a long way to go yet and all to play for. A full 7 days’ streams still have to be counted, along with 6 days of sales.

Once all the Spotify data has been added, you can bet all the money in the world The London Hospices Choir won't be top 10 unless it gets plenty of media attention from Monday onwards.

Also Clean Bandit will most likely be back up to at least #2 within the next 24 hours. If Rockabye isn't #1 this week, it will definitely return to #1 the following week.

Rag'n'Bone Man getting to #1 would be excellent, but Human is struggling to take off on Spotify which is going to prevent the song from achieving its full chart potential.

Well, as of 4pm, this is what the iTunes top 10 looks like. It won't reflect the official chart but I thought people might be interested.

All the charity singles are in freefall. The problem firstly is that all those who really wanted to buy these charity singles will have bought them on Friday or at best over the weekend.

The OCC report with the digital/physical sales from Friday is the biggest misleading article they've published all year. Even by stating that 7 days of streaming is to be added, surely even they know that Spotify is going to push all the digital/physical heavy singles (i.e. songs not doing well on Spotify) right down the chart.

I still have a gut feeling one of them is going to be championed over the next couple of days on the news. It seems like charity singles have now overtaken X Factor as the new way of securing that festive top spot.

But after years of X Factor winner's getting the Christmas #1, wouldn't it become a bit boring and predictable if every year the Christmas #1 goes to the media's charity single of choice that goes to #1 then plummets practically out of the top 40 a week later?

So far, everything indicates Clean Bandit will be the Christmas #1 - extraordinary for a song that has already been #1 for 6 weeks but Rockabye has clearly struck a chord with the music listening public so I'm happy to see Clean Bandit remain #1 until the new year.

The good thing about Clean Bandit being #1 means that we might actually see more artists actually putting something out with the intention of trying to get the Christmas #1 - which hasn't really happened since about 2003! Charity records and X Factor winners are far less likely to make it in the future. It's going to be whatever's getting 4 million streams a week, not what can get 100,000 downloads because it's been hyped there.

It does make you wonder what would happen if one of Adele, Ed Sheeran or Sam Smith released a one-off Christmas single (or even in collaboration with one another). Depending on whether people like the song, it could be massive. Maybe Ed writing the X Factor winners single is sort of like him testing the water for a Christmas single in the future.
