This was shown on Sky News last night and he sounded genuinely upset, saying the UK leaving the EU was a disaster for the union.

And the EU are talking about doing trade deals with the UK early.

Sounds like there is finally some humility from the EU.. and they have accepted Brexit means Brexit and is actually happening.

Perhaps they should have done a bit more to keep us in before the referendum, and gave a little leeway instead of digging their heels in and being intransigent with Cameron when he went for a deal, rather than arrogantly believing we'd never vote to leave.

I imagine the short video I watched was taken out of context and it wasn't the case.
My main gripe is that she was not invited to dinner because the other members wanted to discuss the UK exit and yet, apparently, spent only 20mins on that and the rest of the time discussing other EU matters..if that's the case then as long as we are a member and paying contributions the UK should be involved in these types of discussions and not ostracised..

I'm sure they won't like it when a net contributor leaves, for obvious reasons.

Remind me, though - are we a major player on the world stage, as he seems to be implying (G7, UN security council) or are we an insignificant backwater which will soon sink without trace?

It was mentioned several times during the run up to the referendum that if we voted out we were not going to be at the table for meetings about us and that would start straight away, so it shouldn't really be news to anyone.
It was part of our democratic choice.

Perhaps you should re read the post, the bulk of the discussion May was excluded from was not about the UK exit.

That shouldn't be a shock either, unless you're expecting Her to be asked to leave and come back should a part of the discussion come up she can't be part of.
Besides, Sky News have been saying in advance whether we are invited to each meeting and if so for how long.

At the end of the day most of those countries owe their existence to the blood of British, American and Commonwealth soldiers and the reason so many of their citizens flood to the UK each and every year is that we are one of the few EU countries that doesn't have a basket case economy and mass unemployment. With friends like those who the hell needs enemies. Better off out.

A little leeway? Loads of leeway you mean. Not just for us, but for everyone in the EU. There is s reason it is the only trading block in the world which is economic decline.

You're entitled to that opinion and in afew years we'll find out if we are better off out but the issue being discussed is the meetings we knew we wouldn't be part of before we voted.

They will. Don't forget, they sell us far more than we sell them. They maybe acting intransigent, but they'll soon change their tune once they think about the economics.

As I said, this guy has proven himself to be anti British to the core, but even he understands cold hard economics. A deal will be done. The UK is the EU's biggest market in the world for goods and services. They can't afford for a trade deal not to be done.

Would it have made any difference? UKIP and the right wing press wanted out of the EU at all costs : it wasn't dependent on what deal Cameron brought back from Brussels, they would have portrayed that in the most negative light possible.

My son was at a recent G7 working party. The people from the other six were joking that the UK would leave them too and it would be the G6.

It's like when Jimmy Anderson isn't fit for England and Cook is asked about it he goes on about the players who 'are' fit and in the team.

Given that these EU meetings will be taking about things that will happen in the future and you only have a few hours to get round 27 ministers why waste time on someone who's leaving the team

Probably because very few believed Cameron's deal was worth very much anyway and presenting it in a negative light was not a particularly complicated process. It does appear that those that wanted to stay in the EU would present it in a positive light irrespective of what it actually said.

Until article 50 is triggered we are full paid up members and as they cannot discuss the UK leaving when it has not been actuated yet we should have been at every meeting irrespective.

Look at the newspaper that's reporting this. The reality doesn't match their take on it. Newspapers like this turned the public mood against the EU in the first place, and now they seem determined to undermine any efforts to keep relations on a good footing. No wonder the British media have such a poor reputation abroad.
