And some people claim that darts is not a sport, they need to watch that and then try and back up their claim!
sport, for me, has to have a physical element to it. these guys are definitely highly skilled at the game, but they aren't sportsmen/women. would you call dominoes a sport? |

Especially if you mix that with the mental agility needed to work the maths out in a split second, and also to be able to be as consistently good as the top players are. For me they most certainly are sports people, and deserve for their sport to be classified as such. |

i'm just giving my opinion, you are free to have a differing one. What made me laugh is bridge is trying to get a sports classification. Only reason to do this is they can then apply for money out of the sport lottery fund. If it's just a pastime they then can't try and get money from the lottery or Sport England etc. There reason which has been thrown out is its mental activity. As said in this discussion a sport has to have physical activity. |

Unbelievable match and standard last night from both MVG and Barney.
Just hope MVG can reproduce the same tonight and grind Anderson into the dust! |

We are going off track here but darts does have a physical element as you have to throw the dart at the board !

My pre-final warm-up is watching West Ham vs Manchester United which is exciting for the wrong reasons as the referee has no idea what he's doing!
I don't really mind who wins the final later, it would be nice to see Anderson make it three in a row but if MvG turns it on again like last night we're in for another treat. I'll be lending visual support to the BDO as well once this ends - I have liked the way people have defended its nature and appeal and by not watching it I would be more out of touch with the game as a whole. Besides which, I want to see if the Silver Fox and Wolfie are still in it. |

i'm just giving my opinion, you are free to have a differing one. The IOC recognised darts as a sport a few years ago. Unless they were only recognising darts where competitors playing in WDF and BDO competition, not the PDC. You potentially only need to pot 1 ball as the only thing you do all rack to win a 9 ball pool rack (perhaps not even that as you can potentially pot the 9 ball off the break every time) and in every rack you win to win the match. But you need to throw at least 9 darts in making 501 in every leg you win to win a darts match. Surely it's better feat to be the world darts champion than to be the 9 ball pool champion. |

Why do people respect snooker or 9 ball pool in terms of physical activity than darts.

Remember, back in the eighties you only needed a 90 average to become world champion, then a decade ago you needed 105 to 107 to beat Taylor, and now you need a 116 to 119 to beat Van Gerwen. Phenomenal!!!" |

Here we are then.
Michael van Gerwen versus Gary Anderson in the final of the 2017 William Hill World Darts Championship. The best player in the world versus the double defending champion - which I think is the final we would have all taken had we been offered it 18 days ago. All you can hope at this stage is that it lives up to its billing. |

Time to draw some conclusions.
Darts is a sport. End of. It is a professional pursuit involving specialised equipment, uniforms, scoring, skill, dexterity, durability (You try spending most of Xmas and New Year in a baking auditorium and chucking averages of 100+) and mental fitness. Also, it is shown on Sky Sports, BT Sport etc, and under BBC/ITV/C4 Sport banners. The PDC and BDO are equal in eyes of the law in organising world championships. Regardless of perceived quality, both Scott Waites and Gary Anderson (and indeed Trina Gulliver) are the current World Darts Champions. Let's face it, it could be worse - could be boxing. The BDO suits people who like quieter crowds and suits players who have other jobs and prefer playing county darts week in week out. And due to being on terrestrial, it is seen by more TV viewers than the PDC. But then the PDC suits a different audience and a different type of player. The Lakeside will always be the "home" of darts in my humble opinion, but then I'm watching the Ally Pally one tonight just because I like the sport. I also don't see any of the BDO critics, even fierce ones like Bisto, discredit any of their own world titles. Phil Taylor has won 16, not 14. Barney has won 5, not 1. John Part has won 3, not 1. |
