@rustytrawler
That 'minimum' 8GB RAM; 'minimum' was just left over from a previous composition and I missed it on the editing. I do make mistakes just like everyone else. I don't appreciate you telling me I'm overthinking, and that my post is unhelpful. I spend a lot of time trying to do the opposite of what you say. Quote:
Your money always goes further with a desktop. You can change things or spec to your heart's content. Even if you can't build yourself you can have a custom build done. |

You do indeed, naughty rusty !
Yes indeed, if you are in doubt between laptop and desktop, my advice get a desktop. Much easier to fix any hardware problems, sort out overheating issues etc plus all the above by rustytrawler. Quote:
OK. But Trollheart needs to jump now, at least between the desktop/laptop idea. More options are not helpful. Being unappreciated is par for the course! Welcome!

I would support this. EvilC has been the most helpful one here on this thread and seems to have gone out of his way to research things for me, which I appreciate.
Ok that's very helpful. Think I'm sliding back towards the desktop again... When did I say that? In fact, I said the opposite: that I would likely not make any decision before Christmas (well, obviously), but I'm in no mad rush and would much rather hear and examine all the options than jump at the first one, as this OP shows I was originally tempted to do. Then, to be fair all you need to do is refine your wishlist or budget and you can see when a good deal presents itself. If you don't start looking then you'll not get the feel for a deal - however, if something meets your requirements and is within the budget, holding out is pointless. The proof and value of the pudding is always in the eating. |

OP,
Is using the laptop/PC in bed going to be the key factor in deciding what to buy? I'm wondering as well when you have a PC with the keyboard on your lap in bed, where is the monitor and how big is it and what's the screen resolution? I was doing some more thinking and looking at more options and there's 3 laptops worth a look, all cheap at the moment. First one is a Dell factory certified refurbished with 12 months g'tee Inspiron 17-5759-1210 from the Dell Outlet. OK I know it's a big laptop, and might be too heavy in bed. It's got the i5-6200U with 8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM and 1TB HDD but also you have a 1600x900 screen. There's one at £414 and another at £455: http://outlet.euro.dell.com/Online/S...&puid=817ba06e. Here's the full specs for it that I tracked down eventually: https://uk.hardware.info/product/363...specifications. Don't fancy that? Well what about a new model Dell 15-5559 with the new 7th gen i5-7200U 2.5GHz (with turbo to 3.1GHz) benchmark speed 4721, 8GB 2400MHz DDR4 RAM, 1TB HDD, 2 x USB 3.0, and an anti-glare Full HD 1920x1080 screen £479.50 from Amazon. Bit of a bargain here but only 4 left: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01MSY16...3V9XTF94WQAJG2. Finally another i5-7200U 15.6" again with 8GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB HDD, 2 x USB 3.0, this time standard res screen 1366x768, the new model Acer E15 from Tesco for £429: http://www.tesco.com/direct/acer-156...?source=others. |

You have misunderstood me. What I mean is, you need to decide between a laptop or a desktop. That's not a hard choice. evil c can be as helpful as he likes but it could all be hot air until you make this decision. Either you want the machine to be portable, or you don't.

My own monitor is a Benq 24" with 1920 x 1080 res. To be perfectly honest, my eyesight is not that great and I usually have to use the Magnifier or click ctrl plus to enlarge the screen to read smaller items, so a higher res would probably be useless to me. Are NAS drives more responsive/faster than connected USB ones, I wonder? I've never used wireless data transfer before, but would imagine it might be slower/less reliable, as I've always been told (and it's been my experience too) that, for instance, wireless broadband is not as reliable as good old ethernet, which I have always used. Thanks for all the work you've put in for me, I really appreciate it. I expect I'll wait to see how the sales go, but am definitely now leaning more towards an Intel-based desktop machine. Oh, and Happy Christmas to you all! All the best TH |
