They're all there from day 1 of the BB forum in 2001. Another man moment jp?

Perhaps it needs sparkly tinsel and flashing lights?

On forums which allow embedding, the only times I've ever had issues with it taking forever to load is on my phone.

And yeah, the like / dislike thing will be abused, but in the scheme of things that's meaningless.

Migrating from vbulletin to xenfro isn't rocket science, thousands of boards have done it and this site hasn't been customised..

Still using the old system right now anyway.

Most boards don't have many tens of millions of posts. I know a different site I go on (Alternatehistory.com) did this in May this year, and it took a few tests and a couple of days. And that site is about 6 times smaller than this one (has about 11 million posts overall).

It's not rocket science when the database is in fully-working order. DS has had problems stemming back years and is running on workarounds.

Most websites also wont be attempting to perform migrations on 16 years worth of data. Personally I think they should have used the opportunity to prune the data down to maybe the last couple of years. Things would run much faster and efficiently and as a bonus it would upset all the trolls that keep digging up ancient posts.

This would stop at a stroke the numpties who disinter the rotting corpses of 10 year old threads for no discernable reason.”

You have 56 posts. Who are you to speak?

A static backup on a board as busy as this is going to be a lot out of date, even if it was made a few hours ago. You could back up from a mirror, but IMO that is problematic, as the mirror data is always changing. So, the only way to capture everything is to 'freeze' the system. That's how I understand the situation.

Not in your case, assuming you're the first incarnation.

I disagree that any data should be pruned, but they probably should close any thread thats older than a certain amount and hasnt been replied to for say a year.

This seems perfectly logical considering the practice of necro-bumping is frowned upon and the threads are locked anyway, so why not institute an auto-lock policy for older threads overall ?

Yeah I can see that being an acceptable compromise and most boards already auto-lock threads after x amount of time. I would imagine even the 9 year old version of VBulletin they are running is capable of this feature and I did suggest it in one of the many feedback threads over the years but it got ignored.

The way I see it is if someone has something valid to add or there is a significant development they can always create a fresh thread. Half the time we just get idiots replying directly to posts that are years old and where the users have long since left or been banned.

I wouldnt be too bothered about that, but they should certainly use this as an opportunity to do it as a one off now.
