I wonder if it'll be all songs from one year like the Golden Hour was?

I wonder it will be interactive and listeners have to guess the year.

I also wonder if Simon Bates will be Tony's holiday cover for this show.

This is completely the wrong time of day get Tony back where he belongs on Pick Of The Pops.

Yes, the evenings are traditionally for more specialised programmes, so it's not quite right. However, the slot was available and giving it to Tony as a 'quick win' probably caused the least disruption, as well as the least loss of face for Tony Hall and the rest of the Establishment who treated TB so disgracefully. It's also a rare opportunity to launch a new programme, which can't be bad.

I'm still hoping that things will settle down before too long and that America's Greatest Hits will return some time in 2017 with Gambo, that's still the missing link for me. Gambo is doing a great job with POTP, but AGH is a classic R2 programme that should remain a permanent feature.

I've actually got more into Pick of the Pops since Gambo started doing it and I think he has really made it his own.

I get the feeling that this Golden Hour show is just a temporary thing and the obvious home for Tony will be Sounds of the Sixties but let's not write Brian off yet.

I don't mind Gambo but I can't bear him on POTP's. I;ve given up on it now but will retune if Tony rightfully gets it back.

Agreed. If we are going to have Simon Bates do it, let's have Simon Bates doing it full time. Otherwise it's better not to use him at all.

It's possibly also time for radio two to think about the next generation. Simon Bates, Tony Blackburn, Johnnie Walker, Paul Gambaccini etc are all in their seventies now, so maybe the holiday covers should be younger

No cover required on a show like this Tony can pre-record.

Tony won't be daft enough to do that. He knows that format is associated with Bates. The Golden Hour format can work on radio 2 because you can feature any year but this belongs at 0900 on a Saturday and/or Sunday morning. This slot will be short lived. I see Tony moving to Saturday breakfast including The Golden Hour and SOTS moving to Sunday late afternoon.

Simon Mayo would be more likely.

Although the Golden Hour format is more associated with Bates, it was Tony that first introduced it onto the airwaves when he hosted the 9-12 slot after Noel Edmonds took over the Breakfast Show.

I think it was reported of a Dermot O'Leary Saturday morning show for Radio 2 in the SOTS slot in the New Year, a story that broke about two months ago. I wonder if that story came about when Brian was taken ill and the press put two & two together and came up with the usual 158.

Paul Gambaccini is only 67 and Simon Bates apparently only just turned 70 yesterday,so I think you are being a bit premature,

Sadly this year we have had pre-recorded Steve Wright shows. As much as I genuinely love Steve's shows I do think we should get something a bit different on a Bank Holiday.

Roll on Good Friday

This will be on April 14th.

Shortly before then, on Saturday April 1st, Tony will be returning to Pick of the Pops.

Tony has posted details of his return to the BBC on Radio 2, BBC London and BBC Berkshire this morning on Facebook:

"Tomorrow I return to the BBC ( Blackburn Broadcasting Corporation ) and go back to BBC Radio2, BBC Radio London & BBC Berkshire all in one week !! I am looking forward to going back and being amongst my broadcasting friends again who, like the public have given me so much support behind the scenes during what has been a very unfortunate time to say the least. I'll be with Gary Crowley at 1pm tomorrow as his guest talking about my memories of London, and the songs that remind me of certain parts of it.At 8pm tomorrow I return to BBC Radio2 for a 3 hour Soul Special, then after that every Friday I'll be with you for a whole hour every week on a new show, infact a show I invented in the earl 70's on Radio One called " Tony Blackburn's Golden Hour " where I play you some of the greatest songs of all time from the 50's right up until today.I hope you enjoy the show and before you say it, yes it's just an hour, but that's what it is " The Golden Hour " and nobody will be able to say I'm on for too long !!I'll also be back on the specials on Bank Holidays. Next up it's BBC Radio London at 12pm every Sunday with Soul ON Sunday, a show I love doing as you know, and also back on BBC Berkshire every Friday at 10am with some great music and guests."
