I wonder...

You don't know about the woman in Peterborough prison who had a miscarriage and received no medical assistance (even basic pain relief) for three days then? She was not only forced to clean up the blood herself but she was left alone with the foetus.

Guess she 'deserved it' hey?

(It's actually medication there are problems getting. Medication comes round at specific times and if there are too few staff, medication doesn't get given. That's a bit of a problem if you've got something like diabetes, high blood pressure, or severe mental health problems).

The delightful imaginings of some people to potential mass slaughter (prisoners or not) is quite disturbing. Bet they'd score highly on the Hare test.

I agree, make prison tougher not easier. Spend less money on it as the public finances are stretched, sometimes I think people don't realise that if something costs more like more staff then the government has to cut elsewhere like the NHS or increases taxes which the people complaining would have to pay. Having said that scrimping too much (if that was the cause) has now lead to much more cost.

I say let them rot and as punishment, those that rioted get 12 months solitary so it is impossible for them to grab a key and threaten a guard with a needle.

Build more prisons and keep everyone in solitary. It will stop riots and also stop radicalisation.

i have seen the results of long term solitary confinement in prison and you don`t want to be releasing many people you`ve done that to onto the streets afterwards.

if nothing else the mental health services would collapse.

For £350m per year we could have an extra 10,000 prison officers on £35k wages. That's 2.87% of the foreign aid budget.

Not important in the ideal Digital Spy Dystopia. Just lock 'em up again.

It hasn't yet been established if the incident happened as reported by some newspapers, although it obviously needs to be confirmed.

""Sodexo Justice Services, the prison contractor, conducted an investigation and has shared its findings with the National Offender Management Service (NOMS).
"I can confirm that the Sodexo investigation found that no disciplinary action was necessary in connection with the incident.
"Having considered the findings and the facts of the case, NOMS agrees that this position is correct and that the care, advice and treatment given to the person concerned were equivalent to what would have been prescribed to someone in the community who had presented with the same symptoms."

I certainly haven't heard anything subsequent to the above report.

When you think of some prisons abroad, where they are all crowded together, in their own excrement, in the dark, and these prisoners in the UK are complaining about the quality of their food, tv, showers etc!
Where in the world do prisoners have such cushy conditions as in the UK
Give them something to moan about!

You mean we should aspire to prison conditions in the 3rd world?

Any of our Western European neighbours for a start, all of which send less people per capita to prison and have lower recidivism rates than the UK.

No But these prisoners should appreciate they have it easy compared to others
They are not supposed to enjoy their spell in prison!

They must imagine that such things as Exercise. Meds, Showers, Hot Food, Association, etc
are Rights, not Privileges, and are a bit peeved that Prisons with a Skeleton Staff cannot provide these things reliably.

I think I'd be questioning how a prisoner got hold of a needle, myself.

Mind you, with the amount of drugs going on inside prisons - which doesn't seem to be denied anywhere - one has to wonder exactly what the staff in the prisons are doing.

I would have thought that cutting costs was one of the problems that leads to these riots happening.

No they aren't, but they are supposed to be released (most of them) at some point and re-join society as human beings, rather than feral.

TV, sport, computers, etc are privileges and should be earned
If there is bad behaviour, they should be removed

My be we should be asking why 30 prison officers have left the job in this prison over the last few weeks. The punishment is being sent to prison, prisons are not there to dish out punishment

Err...they are very often the ones bringing the drugs, mobile phones etc. into the prisons

bib - that'll be more expense when they all come down with something - same with bread and water, malnutrition isn't as pleasant as you may think.

I believe we are still a member of the United Nations and therefore still have to adhere to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment."

Then they can't really complain when these kind of things happen. Who watches the watchers?
