had another look yesterday and prefer the way it looks to the S7 but the S7 looks to me like a better phone with better screen. I think it's shiny bling-ugly though but can put it in a wallet flip case.
Pixel, like iPhone, looks better outside a case. I think prosaic and practical outstrips aesthetics! Cheapest S7 I've seen in CPW £500. Hoping that drops in a few months, but expect it depends on the £ and what Samsung do next to recover from the Note.
The S8 is rumoured to be launching in April, so the S7 will drop in price then, or maybe a bit before.

cheers
I expect that I might then start wanting the S8 although the improvements are unlikely to be earth shattering

Yes, that's the problem. You see the latest phone and want that instead. I usually manage to resist. I'm still on the Galaxy S5. I might get the S7, once the S8 is out.

Google needs to add a one-handed mode to the Pixel, something like the S7 has.

Sure it's only a 5-inch screen but it's still tough to use in one hand.

Does Three 800Mhz work with the Pixel anyone know? I's have been tempted to get one if it did, but I'm waiting for the next Samsung Galaxy I think as that will probably get support being a big flagship, also I love the OLED screens and always on lockscreen.

Unless support has been added in a recent update, the answer would be no.

When you use an EE SIM, the option appears but is ghosted out (set permanently on). With a Three SIM that I tried before, the option isn't there at all. Nor is it shown as provisioned if you go into the 'hidden' INFO screen.

Thanks Jon and chenks thanks for the offer not entirely sure but it sounds like it doesn't yet and I assume TinT doesn't show the option for 4G calling. Is is only April till the big Samsung S8 release and the rumours which everyone else is hating I'm loving the sound of! rear fingerprint reader - yes please, no physical button - great! I know others are having kittens, but if that's the case I'm liking the sound of it even more.

Doubt Three will ever support it. If they did they'd be making a good decision and they're incapable of that.

I'm inclined to agree with you in part, it is very disappointing that such a major handset isn't supported and handset support of VoLTE or just basic 800 data has been extremely poor. Three inTouch support also embarrassingly poor in terms of handsets, a very poor show all round on that front.

as a pixel owner, i woudn't put the pixel in the category of "a major handset".
yes it's being pushed much more than Nexus devices were, but it's still a niche device really.

Such a shame, it is Google's own phone release, it is a premium handset. Such a shame all the networks aren't behind support for it. Everyone goes weak at the knees for a Samsung Galaxy or iPhone and every other handset seems to get ignored these days.

I'd have a pixel tomorrow but at around £1000 for a 128gb pixel XL and only a 32gb model for around £650 as the other model, there just not a realistic option for me.

why would you need 128GB on a phone?
the pixel comes with unlimited full photo and video cloud storage.
and with google play music you can store your own music collection in the cloud too.
you don't need 128GB worth of music physically on your phone.

also, where are you seeing the 32GB at £650? i bought mine from CPW for £500 and something, can't remember the exact price.

i also then sold my Nexus 6P for £250.
then again, i always buy sim-free so can offset the cost of the phone by selling the other one.

edit - oh are you talking about a 32GB XL ? i got the normal size.

Google Music, Spotify, Amazon and now Netflix all let you download content for offline viewing. As does iPlayer and more.

For travelling, especially on planes and even trains, streaming isn't an option. On a train it might be with buffering over mobile, and Wi-Fi on a train is likely to block it entirely. On a plane, likewise.

And while I have three SIMs (more actually) with 21GB, 20GB and AYCE data, many people buy plans with 500MB, 1GB or 2GB. They probably shouldn't, but they do.

Finally as the phone has a QHD display, you're going to want the highest resolution and bitrate video. YouTube lets you watch 1440p and I'm hopeful others may too this year.

Personally, I think 64GB and 128GB would have been better. I think 32GB is almost how people slated Apple for still doing a 16GB iPhone.

FWIW, I've got a 32GB Pixel XL and it has 3GB free. I do stream because I've got the data, and usually it works wonderfully. But when I go abroad later this week, I'll have my Mate 9 full of video and music. That's 64GB entry level and can take a 256GB microSD on top!

Which is fine, but I would hope you wouldn't expect that your situation is going to be the case for everyone.

I think I gave some good examples of why people would like more storage.

Bear in mind how much is taken up by the OS itself, as well as the partition for updates, and the huge files you'll have if you are using Daydream VR or playing lots of games (as you might wish to do on a Snapdragon 821 phone with awesome power).

If you say you don't need all that, well that proves my point to. Clearly some people will be downloading apps with 1-2GB of game data.

I didn't have a choice about which model I got, and am living with 32GB. I've watched some films by using a USB-C flash drive, which is another option (but clunky). But there's never any harm having more storage on tap - whether you use it all the time or not.

I may load up a laptop or tablet with lots of films before a long flight, then delete it after.. but for that journey, I want as much storage as possible.

That's perhaps another complaint about the phone. Charging £100 more for the extra storage. In the past, Google didn't charge a huge premium for upping the storage, like Apple did.

Now of course they all know they can get away with it when going after the premium market, so Samsung, Apple and others all charge a hefty surcharge. And if people pay the extra, nothing will stop them doing it in the future.

However, I am not sure sales of the Pixel phones are that staggering. When you're going after an audience that pays almost anything for a brand, I just don't think Google has what it takes.

Personally I don't have a need for high levels of storage on a phone either - but then my main laptop is a Chromebook that only has 8GB of memory in total so i've gotten used to using google's cloud/streaming functions. True, i've now upgraded to 4GB data a month in order to access that content but my contract is still only £9 a month.

I suppose it comes down to your habits and how much free time you spend in non-wifi areas. I can imagine that if you're in a lot of foreign hotels and your work wont pay for internet access (and you're getting region blocked) then you could do with the storage - or if you spend a lot of time on public transport. I'm hardly ever doing either.

I've done the research today and ready to buy the Pixel 32GB in the next day or so. After speaking with EE they cannot match nor beat the deal available at CPW.

5GB data for £35.99 per month with £59.99 upfront = £923.75 cost of ownership which is pretty much on a par with a SIM free outright purchase and sourcing an alternative SIM.

Have you considered phoning up EE to see what you might be able to negotiate on SIM only? It seems they are able to do some good deals (either more data for the same money, or less money for what you're getting offered now).

If they can, you might then be better off buying the phone SIM free?

Assuming he has the money upfront to buy it?

You and I clearly live in very different worlds and use our phones in very different ways, I travel a lot and spend a great deal of time in areas with zero or poor network connectivity on all networks, I take a lot of phones and video, which I store on the phone, I also both Spotify & Google music to listen to offline music which I download at home or when I can use my mobile network, I don't need 128gb, 64gb is enough but they don't do that, plus the price is clearly a rip off for the extra storage.

Fair point, but you could always pay on a credit card and seek to pay it off quickly. That would be factored in to the overall cost of everything.

For that reason I wouldn't buy a phone (or tablet) that doesn't have a micro SD slot. If you like High Definition movies, 128GB is easily filled. You can easily build up a library on micro SD cards.

With adopted storage, I really hoped Google would add a card slot on the Pixel phones - but it must have been too tempting to charge £100 more.
