Contrary to any conspiracy theories, the cha cha challenge made absolutely no difference whatsoever to Ed's standing on the judges' leader board. The whole idea that it did was dreamed up by the media, and stands up to no scrutiny at all. Ed was at the bottom of the leader board regardless, therefore he got the fewest points from the judges. But the public could have reversed that … and they didn't.
What happened to Ed is a familiar pattern we have seen in virtually every single series of Strictly: comedy contestant scores lowest points from the judges, the public all vote for him/her; this keeps the comedy contestant safe for weeks and technically stronger celebs fall by the wayside (much to the vexation of some on here); then the public grow tired of the comedy contestant, and his/her vote dwindles, and s/he leaves. The only time this model didn't fit was with John Sergeant in Series 6, whose popularity - hyped by the media - threatened to get so out of hand that he might not only have made the final but could also have lifted the glitter ball trophy. But the judges were much, much harsher with him, and Arlene Phillips in particular did repeated TV and radio interviews in which she trashed him - which only made the public like him more. I think lessons have been learned from that instance - and that is why the judges (apart from Craig) are now routinely nice to the comedy contestant.
