Tina Turner
There's been a bit of a Tina Turner resurgence going on in my life at the moment, she really is an amazing singer and it's a shame she no longer tours.
Anyway, was just watching some clips on youtube and was wondering if she ever released her 'Private Dancer' tour on DVD, complete with the David Bowie and Bryan Adams duets? |

Tina is my favourite diva.
Everyone knows her but she still feels strangely underrated compared to other legends like Aretha, Dusty and Nina Simone. To have been able to reinvent herself in her mid-40s as a massive international solo star was nothing short of amazing. I also can't think of another artist who could span so many genre like she could. Anyway, here is one of my favourite obscure Tina songs from her 1990 album, Foreign Affair; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWYG3kWwDHU |

If they get enough requests for it maybe they'd think about releasing it!

It makes me laugh when you hear people like Simon Cowel state that young kids will only buy music by artists who are closer in age to themselves. I think Tina was about 50 then, and she was well able to keep up with and outshine other artists in the charts at that time. Not only is she a wonderful singer she is also an amazing performer. Check out some of Tina's 1982 performances. I absolutely love the song Foreign Affair - good choice! |

I love Tina Turner. I understand that there may be some sense of sell out in the 80s but Tina has had an extraordinary life and an amazing voice. I think her ability to be both a soul singer and a rock singer means she could perform such a wide range of music.

I've treated myself to a portable turntable this morning and one 12" single I have at home is Tina's "The Best".
Might be nearly 30 years old but still sounds as good today as it did back then, even if it is overplayed. Tina's voice is very unique IMHO and she's had an interesting life/career. |

maybe its because she 'sold out' in the 80's, courting the commercial singles charts with pop . id suggest that whilst the others also released singles, they stayed true to their soulful style?

She didnt sell out, she just refused to sing the kinds of songs Ike forced her to sing (R n B) because she didnt like them. Her love was always for rock music. Her comeback was mostly due to David Bowie championing her when no one else would give her a break. |

Yeah she is very underrated. But equally I do respect her retirement. That she decided to live a quiet life in Switzerland with her loved one.
I saw a tour of hers last year in Sky Arts. She was an incredible live performer. A clear influence to Beyoncé. |

She's not underrated compared to many of the ladies who were in The Ikettes. She's had periods of great exposure and success. How many Tina fans could name any singers from The Ikettes (who have plenty of releases in their own right) or name more than a very few records from the lengthy Ike & Tina Turner period I wonder... Nina Simone or Aretha franklin she ain't. On selling out, I'm sure Aretha could be accused of selling out just as easily for making pop records with George Michael if someone thought that was important. |

Ike 'forced' her to sing R&B? That's hilarious. They certainly abused cocaine and had a volatile and violent relationship and unsurprisingly she would want to have closure on those years but I think she might have been content to sing the great music they were involved in at the time. She even claims her name was given by Ike so he could control her, disregarding the fact that huge numbers of performers then and now use stage names. Covers in the 80's of 'Ball of Confusion' and 'Let's Stay Together' don't support someone who hated R&B.

That Ball of Confusion track was part of a compillation album produced by BEF and was chosen for her by them, she was not keen on the song, likewise initially, she was not keen on Lets Stay Together because of it's RnB roots. Do you honestly think that Tina or any of the ikettes had any influence over Ike Turner as to what they could sing? LOL |

Dusty Springfield also "sold out" in the 80s by working with the Pet Shop Boys and releasing typical 80s inspired pop music......only that no one remembers this in the course of her career as it flopped.
Personally, I loved her 80s output. |

Tina Turner didn't suddenly just stop. She was at the time running away from her abusive husband, getting a divorce and trying to pay off debts whilst all the while working her butt off in crappy clubs. She's always worked!

Her comeback was mostly due to David Bowie championing her when no one else would give her a break. im not sure why after rdmh their material wasnt more popular. well, whether anyone thinks she 'sold out' or not i guess is down to perception. id rate her/their 60's material as far more experimental, and less 'safe' , more in tune to them creating the music they wanted too rather then the 'safer' more commercially successful material she produced in the 80's. but then again, as i said, rdmh for me was her/them at their very best, im not keen at all on her 80's material. Nobody has said she is underrated compared to the ikettes, but she is compared to her other contemporaries of the time. Oh, and PP Arnold, ex ikette made a pretty good name for herself.

Ike and Tina always performed R&B. Their entire output was a variety of R&B, Funk, Soul and Rock. Ike was a pioneer of the Rock & Roll sound within R&B; the foundation of Rock music. Tina's 1970s solo albums are full of R&B as much as other styles. If she's turned her back on the music that made her that's unfortunate. |

Tin Machine had fallen on the grenade, gotten rid of the "Phil Collins-Tina Turner-1980s-Let's Dance-vibe" that he was uncomfortable with, and basically re-booted the Bowie career system. http://musicdish.com/mag/?id=8017 |

That's interesting, because I recently read an interview with Reeves Gabrels, David Bowie's long-time guitarist, and he had this to say about how Bowie had apparently become uncomfortable with being associated with Tina Turner:

Also, I'm guessing she and Bowie weren't exactly enemies as he was one of the few guests at her wedding in 2013.

Whether Bowie became uncomfortable with her or not (not Bowie's own words)in the late 80s/early 90s, it still doesnt negate the fact that Bowie did champion her, in early 80s, and got her signed to his label.
