Whilst I do appreciate that smoking tobacco of any description (do you feel the same way about people with electronic cigarettes or Vapesticks, I wonder)
Those appear to be.. much riskier-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KR7_xwQbYp0

Now that's what I call a distraction. Anyways, the OP's also suggested drivers should grab a camera and take pics of smokers chucking fag ends out the window. So road safety doesn't seem a real concern.

I'm more worried that you're constantly on the look out for bad smokers whilst you're at the wheel. Maybe concentrate on your car for a little bit?

Part of being a driver is to be aware of others around you, they may pose a hazard. It's not just about looking after your own little box on wheels.

An example is being stuck at traffic lights and not checking your rear + side mirrors, for motorbikes and cyclists who will prolly "filter" between the cars or car and kerb. Lack of situation awareness.....often because people are doing other stuff in their car.

History shows us that it's possible to ask researchers to study a wide variety of questions in such a way that the conclusions will support the funder's bias.

"Does sucking a sweet whilst driving cause a distraction for the driver? " would result in the inevitable answer Yes.

The better question would be "Does sucking a sweet whilst driving cause a distraction for the driver to such a degree that it significantly increases the risk of them having an accident? " to which the answer would be No.

Unless, the packet needs undoing first...

Before cracking down on smoking, they should start by banning those wannabe cab drivers that go about on Mopeds with the driver looking at the clipboard more than the road

They are a menace

Do I really need to say "If you can't work out to open the packet before commencing the journey. ..." ?

Who plans that before setting off?!

You may have a half opened packet of sweets, but run out half way and need to open another packet....

Every time I see this thread title on the main board I think to myself 'where's the campaign?'. Is there a campaign, is it a request for us to campaign - a call to arms if you will, is there a petition, what WHAT?!!!

This is only the start.

You recall the call to ban hand held mobiles whilst driving then texts, its happened, next will be ban on smaking/driving as this is even more dangerous.

Can we have a few prized clowns here to own up to driving whilst smoking, keeping their window open to trash the streets with their smelly fag ash, then flick out their fag end at another car or member of the public?

Honestly, I wish I was braver and stronger as I shove that fag end up the clowns rear if I saw someone throw out fag ends out of vehicles.
I've had a fag end land between my cars bonnet and window and smoke was coming out, could have easily set my car on fire if I had a mass of leaves stuck in there. Also a risk the same fag end could have dropped in some car with the window open, on someone.

At work, a colleague told me how a clown flicked a fag end and it dropped on his passenger seat, a Mercedes CLK convertible and damaged his leather seat. The Merc driver followed the clown in Corsa that threw the fag end and challenged the Corsa driver and told him to pay for the repairs and demanded an exchange of details for insurance needs. Sadly, the Corsa driver, a right through and a clown decided to attack my colleague. Little did the Corsa driver know that the Merc driver was a rugby player and my colleagues in self-defence picked up the thug and slammed him down into the road. The thug soon calmed down and soon exchanged details, lol

Nope

Changing gear with a lighter in one's hand is easy.
Changing gear with a Big Mac takes a little practice.

You... wait? Any sensible smoker knows that, so lights up when not much is happening. But if smoking really were a hazard, the anti-smoking lobby would have manipulated statistics to show this.

Tell me.. Would you describe yourself as a tolerant person?

I see you've been at the Christmas spirit early again. Time for some black coffee.

Well, that's fine when there's not much going on.....but in many built up zones with heavy traffic, multiple roundabouts, multi lane junctions, and so on, you would never get the chance to light up. I bet most people just do it anyway.

And what if the unexpected happens.....large truck pulls out in front of you on a 60mph road......or car pulls onto roundabout in front of you (from your left). Happens all the time.
So, what do u do, brake, steer, drop burning cigarette into lap? Drop lighter? Your not in full control of the vehicle (especially when your privates are on fire!).

Since the gov needs as much money as poss, and since we know this might get seen by people way above our pay scale, i might suggest here is a way to bring in some more money!

Most towns give you plenty of chances, ie waiting at traffic lights or just sitting in traffic.

Brake is foot work, and it's easy to steer with a ciggie in your hand, or just in your mouth. Again people who seem to think it's dangerous must be very un-coordinated.

Well, I am familiar with Swindon inc the magic roundabout. They also have roundabouts on just about every junction (as does most of Wiltshire). There are lanes heading in all different directions.......you don't have time to be fiddling about....you need to be driving and that inc constant observation, positioning in the road, indicating almost every couple hundred yards due to a lane change or another roundabout. if you don't, you will crash or somone will crash into u because you were distracted and forgot to indicate or check your blind spot. And if that lot doesn't get you, a bus will just pull out in front of you without checking behind. And if that still doesn't get you the cyclists going wherever they feel like it will - and you will be to blame if you hit them - because you were distracted or not in full control.

It only takes a couple of seconds.....
A few years ago, a couple of teenagers were killed while driving near to where I live. They were driving at night, up a steep hill, which has a bend at the top. If you go off the road there at 50-60mph the trees will kill you outright. And that's what happened. The driver looked down to change a cd.....that's all.

Even the most hardened of smokers are able to wait till they have exited the last Magic Roundabout, or rounded a bend, before lighting up.

Wow. Seriously if you think that sort of behaviour is commendable it's time to take a step back and think on

Princessxxxx have you ever had a prang or accident?
Yes, several times. Twice when I was stopped at red traffic lights, a corsa went into my backside and the other time it was a bmw 3 series.

Another time when a corsa pulled out in front of me at a roundabout, and recently a bmw 3 series hit my car as it was parked in a NCP car park their cctv caught the chavvy driver for me.

My colleague was attacked just because he demanded the clowns details for insurance purposes. If my colleague had not taken decisive action the thug would have beaten him up, so it was self-defence.

Some of us buy just one bag of sweets. We open them at the garage or shop. Just saying....
