Do men not drop cigarettes? Or are their clothes cigarette proof?

Btw, should have added this to my original post. A few months ago, hot summers day, my dad driving down dual carriage way, slow moving nose to tail traffic, about 25 mph, a van driver threw his fag end out and landed between the bonnet and plastic ducts where wiper are and smoke was coming out. The van driver my dad could not catch up with. But imagine, warm/hot days not everyone turns on air con and windows open and if your rear window was open a burning seat or if you had a child in a seat and the fag end landed in the child seat.

I'm sure others have similar example so more of a reason to BAN smoking in cars all together
I've never had anyone's fag land in my childs seat. Have you got any real examples of this happening in the UK?

Education is better than a ban. Not all smokers are selfish and thoughtless.

I've never had one come into the car I'm travelling in, never mind land in a car seat.

Men do not run the risk of dropping a lit cigarette between their laps (men generally only have one lap) and they wear skirts less than women do.

They tend to wear shorts more than women though.

Yes but shorts are statistically proven to not generate a towering inferno of flames.

I suggested banning the planet, just to be sure

And the health damaging toxic muck you driving your car produces?

Women have two laps?

Men can drop a cigarette between their legs and cause even more of a problem trying to rescue it.

I know I'm just cynical, but there seem to be a lot of new members around all suddenly posting 'facts' obviously without posting anything to back them up.

98.9% of the voices in my head know this!

There's a one in Broadcasting with a new thread about the TV licence and iPlayer.

Ban young children from cars, they are far more distracting than fags or phones. Plus all of the extra exercise will solve the childhood obesity crisis; It's a win, win situation

Seems to be a recent penomenon. Make something up and then state it as fact.

When pressed for hard evidence, your post will usually be conveniently ignored.

If it was banned it would be pointless without effective enforcement. If/when technology is used, it would probably scoop up all the other illegal/dangerous things people do as well. Still want it?

no i`m sorry for the woosh

the cherry was the red hot end of his cigarette which is the equivilant of getting a wasp in your eye in terms of instant flinching distraction i would say.

No way! I only have one and I thought I was a woman. I'm going to have to re-evaluate my entire existence now.

What?

A thread about smoking with cyclists shoe-horned into it? You couldn't find less contentious issues here in GD!

As for facts, did you know that only atheists smoke and vegans are the worst cyclists!

Smoking has done society no good what so ever.
I think you'll find that the tax receipts from smoking far outweigh the cost burden to the NHS for looking after ill smokers. So smoking (or the money it raises in taxes) has had a positive benefit to society.

Incidentally, I'm a non-smoker.

Please tell me how many reported incidents has there been in the past decade or two of a lit cigarette flying through a window into a child seat.

Enough

Every day I see smokers trying to drive, surely this is as risky as trying to use the hand held mobile or texting/etc.

I've read stories where cops have fined drivers for drinking water/soft drinks behind the wheel. Surely the smoker is putting at risk other road users and pedestrians.

Feel free to agree with me, close to 99% throw their fag out of the car when they have finished.
I'd be in favour of cigarette smoking in vehicles being made illegal, since it's obviously a major distraction if you drop it, the burning end falls out, or it blows back into the vehicle when trying to throw it out of the window. Cigarette smoking is already illegal in all PSVs AFAIK, so this would be the next step.

The other thing is cigarettes thrown out of the window are a fire hazard in dry weather.

Ideally in a moving vehicle you should be driving and only that. No talking to other passengers, no in-vehicle entertainment, no sat nav, no soft drinking, no smoking, no mobile phones etc., as they are all distractions. Obviously that is never going to happen in full and one has to be realistic, minimizing the number of distractions. Many roads are so busy these days, that's the only way.
